o Verizon, Kazaa Voice Support for Online Music Licensing Scheme

Sydney, Australia -- Wireless network operator Verizon Wireless and
file-sharing service Kazaa have come forward to back a concept that would
compensate artists and record labels for music downloaded from the
Internet. The concept calls for a flat fee to be placed on services such
as Internet connections provided by Internet service providers, CD burners
or computers, which enable songs to be downloaded from file-sharing
services like Kazaa and Morpheus and copied onto CDs. "Users pay a fee,
then there is no copyright violation and content owners would have a new
source of revenue," Verizon spokeswoman Sarah Deutsch told Newsbytes.
Verizon told Newsbytes that it isn't affiliated with Australia-based
Sharman Networks, which operates Kazaa, or the company's Intellectual
Property User Fee (IPUF) proposal of a $1 per month flat fee on ISP
accounts. "We're all saying that instead of trying to obliterate file
swapping, the way to go is to try to make money from it," Sharman lobbyist
Phil Corwin told CNET News.com. The Computer and Communications Industry
Association (CCIA), whose members include Verizon, Sun, Yahoo and Oracle,
also told News.com that it sees promise in the idea of a compulsory
license. "We're several years into this problem, and it's not getting
better," Will Rodger, director of public policy for CCIA, told News.com.
"We may as well recognize what technology can and can't do."

o TiVo, Best Buy, Sheryl Crow Collaborate on PVR "Advertainment"

Los Angeles -- Personal video recorder manufacturer TiVo announced on
Thursday an interactive advertising deal with electronics and media retail
chain Best Buy. Best Buy will air 30-second commercials on MTV next month
featuring an electronic tag that TiVo's 400,000 subscribers can access
with their remote control, linking to a video showcase of Best Buy
products as well as a "behind the scenes" jam session with artist Sheryl
Crow. Two singles from Crow's recently released album "C'mon C'mon" are
featured, and 2000 CDs will be given away to subscribers who purchase the
new album from their TiVo. When finished exploring the "advertainment"
section, viewers will be returned to the exact point in the program they
were watching. Minneapolis-based Jambalaya, a subsidiary of Initio
Marketing Communications, worked with Best Buy to develop the TiVo
Showcase content.

o WSJ: Four Execs Leave Gemstar to Join Liberty Media Interactive TV Unit

Pasadena, Calif. -- The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that four
executives at Gemstar-TV Guide International, a provider of interactive
program guide technology for digital television, have left the company to
join Liberty Media's recently formed Liberty Broadband Interactive
Television (LBIT). The new company was formed after Liberty acquired
OpenTV, a developer of operating system software for set-top boxes used to
deliver interactive television services. The four departing executives
were: head of licensing Mark Allen, corporate development executive Toby
DeWeese, chief technology officer William Thomas and senior vice president
Craig Wagge. The Journal pointed out that the departures were not
surprising, as the four worked closely with former Gemstar co-chief
operating officer Peter Boylan, who was named to head Liberty Broadband
Interactive Television.

30 Reasons to Attend Jupiter Plug.IN -- July 8-9 - NYC

Reason #27: Contracts and royalty schedules are woefully inadequate for
the digital music world.
Prominent artists such as Madonna and the Beatles keep their music out of
subscription services until the royalty payments are equitable and
significant. Some contracts were written a dozen years ago or more. But
should they be revised now to fairly divide the digital music revenue pie,
or are these revenues too pie-in-the-sky to warrant the attention?
