o Report: U.S. Video Game Sales Up
15.6% in April
New York - Countering an ongoing sales slump, U.S. video
game sales were up 15.6% in April, over the same period a year ago,
according to preliminary data from market research firm NPD Funworld.
Popular titles during the month included "Elder Scrolls IV:
Oblivion," "Kingdom Hearts II" and "The Godfather". Forbes.com
polled various analysts on the whether the rise will be sustained --
countering several months of soft sales -- or fade in coming months.
While Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post expects sales to rise in the
next several months, based on Xbox 360 shipments and price cuts on
other consoles, Cowen & Co. analyst Lowell Singer believes the April
sales tally was an anomaly and soft sales will continue for the rest
of the year.

o Major League
Baseball in Legal Dispute with Fantasy Site Over Stats
New York - Major League Baseball's Internet arm has sued a
company that provides real-world statistics on players for use in
online fantasy baseball leagues, arguing the company needs to
purchase a license for the data, The New York Times reported. St.
Louis-based CBC Distribution and Marketing says the data it
publishes are newsworthy facts, protected by the First Amendment,
and do not contain copyrighted or trademarked images of the players
or logos of their teams. "(CBC's) business here is not publishing
statistics. The business here is running a league," Major League
Baseball Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman told The Times. The league
has licensed statistics, as well as logos and images, to 7 operators
of fantasy sites this year, including CBS SportsLine -- down from 19
last season. The case at hand, which will come to trial on Sept. 5,
will pit the players' claims to a "right of publicity" with regard
to how their names are used in commercial ventures, against
traditional First Amendment free press protections.

o AOL
Launches Free IM Telephone Service
Dulles, Va. - Two weeks after first leaking the news, AOL
on Tuesday officially launched a new service that will allow the 41
million users of its instant messenger to receive free incoming
calls through their computers. Through its new AIM Phoneline
service, the company said that IM users will be able to get free,
local phone numbers to receive the calls, as well as free online
voicemail. The company is offering an upgraded service, which allows
users to make calls to anyone in the U.S. or 30 other countries, for
$14.90 a month. "Our research shows that the need for a separate and
confidential phone number is becoming as important to consumers as
the need for multiple email addresses," said John McKinley, the
president of AOL Digital Services.

o Report:
2006 iPod Accessories Production to Top $104 Million in China
Hong Kong - Manufacturers of accessories for Apple's iPod
and other portable media players in China and Taiwan expect the
value of their production to increase 37% in 2006, to over $104
million, according to market research firm Global Sources.
Accessories factored into the report include portable speakers,
docking stations, cables, chargers, cases and wireless transmitters.
The firm predicts hikes in export prices 2006 will help fuel an 85%
rise in production value in mainland China, to $33 million, while
Taiwan will see about $71 million. "At least 50 new suppliers are
ready to begin production this year in Taiwan and mainland China
alone," said Global Sources' Mark Saunderson. "Production costs are
increasing due to compliance with the European restriction of
hazardous substances directive and high energy costs," Saunderson
added. "Many manufacturers expect to increase export prices by about
10 percent in the months ahead."
