o Despite Narrowing Quarterly Loss, Napster Shares Fall 7%

Los Angeles - Napster on Thursday announced that it narrowed its fourth quarter loss, from $24.3 million a year ago to $4.4 million in its recent quarter, but the company's stock still fell 7% on low estimates for the upcoming first quarter. The company said its paid subscriber base grew to 606,000, an increase of 16% over the third quarter and 54% over the same period a year ago; the figure includes 59,000 subscribers to its university services. Napster's paid subscribers made up 87% of its total music revenue, which is also generated from a la carte song sales. The company launched a new ad-supported version of its Napster.com service in the recent quarter, which lets anyone stream any of the 2 million full-length tracks in its library for free, up to five times per song.

o AOL Acquires Broadband Video Ad Insertion Firm Lightningcast

Dulles, Va. - After using its platform for more than four years, AOL said on Thursday that it has acquired Lightningcast, a developer of broadband video advertising technology, for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 1999, Lightningcast and its 34 employees -- led by CEO Tom MacIsaac -- will now become a unit of Baltimore-based Advertising.com, an AOL subsidiary. The company will continue to be based in DC. Lightningcast's technology is used by publishers to insert broadband video and audio ads into video content across the web. AOL has used Lightningcast's platform since 2002, originally for audio and later for video streaming ads. "This acquisition will provide a huge infusion of talent, technology, and publisher relationships for Advertising.com at a time when streaming video is growing at a blistering pace," said Mike Kelly, the president of AOL Media Networks, which oversees Advertising.com. Reuters reported that AOL has now acquired 7 companies since August, 2005, to strengthen its online entertainment and advertising business. Lightningcasts has received venture capital backing from Nokia Venture Partners, Redleaf Group, Global Internet Ventures, and New Markets Growth Fund.

o Louisiana House Unanimously Approves Violent Video Game Bill

Shreveport, La. - The Louisiana State House has voted unanimously to approve a bill that would ban the sale of violent video games to minors, and classify such games in the same category as pornography. Retailers caught selling violent games to minors would face fines of up to $200, and up to one year in prison. The bill would also enable a judge to determine whether a game should be removed from store shelves. Although debate in the House included talk that similar bills have routinely been struck down by the courts as unconstitutional, the House voted 102-0 to approve the bill. "That's for the courts to decide," said Rep. Danny Martiny (R-Kenner), the Associated Press reported. The bill now goes to the Louisiana State Senate, which has come up with its own, less-restrictive video game bill.
