o Copy of "Star Wars: Episode III"
Already Leaked Online
London -- A "workprint" of the new "Star Wars" movie has surfaced
on the Internet, according to reports on websites including Waxy.org
and Cinematical.com. Reuters reported that several screener copies
of the film had been posted on the BitTorrent peer-to-peer
file-sharing network, but these copies were apparently fakes --
possibly seeded by the movie industry to frustrate would-be pirates.
A DVD-R of a workprint of the film, which includes timecodes on each
frame, was posted online by a group called VISA on Wednesday. A
workprint would likely have originated from within the
post-production process for the film, rather than from a moviegoer
who had smuggled a camcorder into a screening and posted the
resulting recording online.

o Wal-Mart
Shutters Online DVD Rentals, Signs Promotional Deal with Netflix
Los Gatos, Calif. -- Online DVD rental service Netflix announced
on Thursday that it has signed a promotional agreement with retail
giant Wal-Mart, which will shutter its competing DVD rental service
and instead promote the service offered by Netflix. In exchange,
Netflix will promote Wal-Mart's online DVD sales business. Existing
Wal-Mart DVD rentals subscribers, whose numbers were not disclosed,
will be able to stay at their current subscription rate with Netflix
for another year. Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix issued a statement
advising investors it does not believe the agreement will materially
impact its current subscriber growth or financial performance;
despite the qualifying statement, shares of Netflix rose 17% on the
news on Thursday.

o Christian
Investors Compel Best Buy to Toughen Violent Game Sales Policy
New York -- A group of retailer Best Buy's shareholders said on
Thursday that they are withdrawing a shareholder resolution against
the company concerning the sale of violent video games to minors.
Christian Brothers Investment Services (CBIS) said it withdrew its
complaint after Best Buy agreed to implement a tougher policy on
M-rated game sales to minors. The retailer will institute a "mystery
shopper program" -- basically an ongoing, in-house sting operation
that will audit cashiers to make sure they are asking for ID from
any customer who attempts to purchase an M-rated game that appears
to be under 21. The policy will also require Best Buy employees to
sign an agreement stating that they agree to ID customers, and will
provide unspecified disciplinary actions against those found selling
violent games to minors. "We are pleased with the progress to date
at the company and commend Best Buy for improving its business
practices in this area," said CBIS corporate advocacy director Julie
Tanner. "We believe that Best Buy's work here will diminish
reputation risk and protect shareholder value."

o Coca-Cola,
Shazam Partner on U.K. Digital Song and Ringtone Giveaway
London -- Coca-Cola announced that it has partnered with Shazam
Entertainment, a developer of mobile music recognition technology,
on a two-month promotion that will give away 5,000 ringtones or
full-song downloads each day. Consumers can call a special number
and hold their cell phone near an audio source, which will then
reply with a text message listing the artist and name of the song.
The message will also relay whether the consumer has "won" a
ringtone or full-song download of the track, or else provide a link
to purchase it via mobile phone. Entrants at MyCokeMusic.com will
receive one free "CokeTag," which counts as a single call to
Shazam's mobile music identification service; additional CokeTags
will be available for 25 pence (46 cents) each, rising to 50 pence
(92 cents) following the conclusion of the promotion. Ringtones and
downloads purchased from MyCokeMusic.com will cost about $2.50.

o Sony Licenses
Interactive TV Patents from Acacia Research
Newport Beach, Calif. -- Acacia Research, a holder of patents on
digital media transmission, interactive TV and other technologies,
announced on Thursday that Sony Corporation has licensed the
company's interactive TV patents. Financial terms of the deal were
not disclosed. The patents cover receivers of interactive TV data,
such as set-top boxes and certain digital TVs. Newport Beach,
Calif.-based Acacia has aggressively sought to license its various
patents, securing licenses for its broad streaming media patent from
Disney, Playboy and others. It has also filed patent infringement
claims against the nation's leading cable and satellite TV firms,
including DirecTV, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision, in
addition to actions against a large number of adult entertainment
websites. Separately, Acacia is also suing chipmaking giants Intel
and Texas Instruments for infringements of a patent it acquired from
Microprocessor Enhancement Corporation.

o eBay to Sell
Auction Items on Time Warner Cable Interactive TV
New York -- Online auctioneer eBay has signed an agreement with Time
Warner Cable, to offer viewers the ability to bid on items using
interactive TV technology, Reuters reported. The technology,
developed by Plano, Texas-based BIAP, will let viewers monitor bids
they first placed on a PC, as well as raise their bids using a TV
remote. Time Warner Cable digital subscribers in Austin, Texas will
be the first to whom the feature is offered, during a one-year test
of the technology.

o VC Firm
Enterprise Partners Acquires Media Database Provider Muze
La Jolla, Calif. -- Venture capital firm Enterprise Partners
announced on Thursday that it has acquired New York-based Muze, a
provider of informational databases on music, movies, books and
video games to online and traditional retailers. Financial terms of
the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1990, Muze was subsequently
owned by John W. Kluge and the Metromedia Company. Customers of the
company's data on CDs, DVDs, video games and other media include
eBay, Yahoo, Borders, RealNetworks, Best Buy and Overstock.com.
"Over the past 15 years, Muze has painstakingly developed a
world-class library of meta-data that covers the entire range of
entertainment content," said Enterprise Partners managing director.
"As the acquisition of digital media content has exploded and
digital collections have expanded, people are facing the headache of
organizing and finding what they want. Muze data is the key that
unlocks the promise of digital media."

o Report: 44%
of Users Want Free Video for Cell Phones; Only 19% Will Pay
New York -- Forty-four percent of online consumers are interested in
viewing free video on their cell phones, but only 19% say they are
willing to pay for it, according to a new survey by market research
firm JupiterResearch. The firm said that the lack of network
coverage, high prices for both handsets and service and limited
access to real time content will dampen consumer interest in the
near future. "Although consumer interest in mobile video is strong,
the cell phone will remain a voice-centric device in the near term,"
said Julie Ask, research director at JupiterResearch. Only 4% of
consumers cited the ability to watch video as a priority feature for
them when purchasing their next handset.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Thursday reported on new technology
being developed to secure DVDs by requiring consumers to provide
their thumbprint each time they wish to view a movie. Researchers at
UCLA are developing RFID tags that would be altered at the retailer
at time of purchase, to include information relating to the buyer
that would prevent others from viewing the DVD. "Content owners
would like to have extremely tight control on the content so they
can maximize revenue," UCLA researcher Rajit Gadh told Wired News.
Princeton University computer science professor Ed Felten was wary
of the scheme: "I think people would find it creepy to give their
fingerprint every time they wanted to play a DVD."
