o EU: Microsoft Could Face Hefty
Fines in "Matter of Weeks"
Brussels -- According to a spokesman for the European Commission,
Microsoft now has only weeks until the Commission decides whether to
fine the U.S.-based software giant as much as 4 million euro ($5
million) a day. Under the terms of a landmark ruling last year,
Microsoft was ordered to make its Windows operating system available
without Windows Media Player, as well as share protocol information
with rival server makers. "Within a matter of weeks, rather than
months, we will have to decide whether we are satisfied that they
are complying with the remedies to our satisfaction," Commission
spokesman Jonathan Todd said. "And if they're not, we'll have to
decide whether we'll begin the proceedings to begin daily fines."
That said, Todd added that the Commission had not yet reached the
stage where it would levy a fine.

o Court Allows
Tech Giants to Join Case against Microsoft
Brussels -- A European court announced that it has granted
permission to a group of large technology companies including IBM,
Nokia, Oracle, RealNetworks and Red Hat to join the European
Commission's antitrust case against U.S.-based software giant
Microsoft. The companies had asked to help the Commission to defeat
a legal challenge by Microsoft seeking to overturn last year's
landmark antitrust ruling. Late last week, the Court of First
Instance in Luxembourg ruled that the group, dubbed the European
Committee for Interoperable Systems (ECIS), would be permitted as an
"intervener" in the case. ECIS said it would support the
Commission's efforts to keep Microsoft from using its dominance in
the PC operating systems market to gain an unfair advantage in the
related markets. Of the group, Seattle-based RealNetworks also has
its own, separate $1 billion antitrust case against Microsoft
pending in U.S. courts.

o Apple to
Offer Podcast Support in Coming iPod Software Update
Washington -- Apple chairman Steve Jobs has announced the company
plans to release its first software that supports "podcasts" in an
update to the software for its iPod music players due in the next
two months, MarketWatch.com reported. Independent programmers such
as former MTV personality Adam Curry have to date created the most
popular software used to create and distribute podcasts -- or,
recorded MP3 files that users can subscribe to, and have
automatically downloaded to an iPod or other portable MP3 player. In
addition to offering podcast software for the iPod, Apple plans to
solicit podcast content from amateurs and then offer some of these
feeds to users of its iTunes software.

o BitTorrent
to Launch Search Engine with Ask Jeeves Sponsored Links
San Francisco -- The developers behind the BitTorrent
peer-to-peer file-sharing application plan to soon launch an
advertising-supported search engine that will index the movies,
songs, software and other files available on the network, Wired News
reported. Sponsored links on the search engine will be provided
through Ask Jeeves. The search engine, expected to launch within two
weeks, will on one hand make it easier for many users to find files
on BitTorrent, while at the same time providing a potential target
to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which has
recently sued operators of BitTorrent servers. Without a centralized
index, like the one the search engine will create, the MPAA and
others have thus far only been able to target individuals operating
the various servers across the world that host "torrent" files. "One
of the differences between BitTorrent and Kazaa has been that
there's a central Kazaa company... There hasn't been a similar
centralized service or site associated with BitTorrent, and now
there is," Stanford law professor Mark Lemley told Wired News.

o Game Retailer
Electronics Boutique Acquires Spain's Jump Ordenadores
West Chester, Penn. -- Video game retailer Electronics Boutique
announced on Monday that it has acquired Spanish retailer Jump
Ordenadores. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Jump, which operates 141 stores in several Spanish provinces,
currently sells PCs and related products, and will introduce video
game hardware and software over the next several months. Electronics
Boutique said the purchase will give it an established foothold in
the fourth-largest video game market in Europe. Pennsylvania-based
Electronics Boutique agreed in April to a $1.4 billion acquisition
by rival GameStop, which will give the combined company a total of
more than 4,000 stores worldwide.
