o Report: Americans Increasingly
Storing Large Video Files on PCs
Port Washington, N.Y. -- The number of Americans with large video
files stored on their PCs rose from 8% last year to 13% in March
2005, according to a survey conducted by New York-based market
research firm NPD Group. Of the 13% who had a 150MB video file on
their computers -- about the size of a half-hour TV show -- each
additionally had an average of 15 such files on their PCs. "What
will trouble many, especially in the film and video industry, is
that some consumer collections include material that is clearly
pirated," said NPD analyst Russ Crupnick. "In March, we noted
several dozen full-length theatrical films on computers well before
their expected DVD release date, including 'Ocean's Twelve,' 'Lemony
Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events,' 'Million Dollar Baby,'
'The Aviator,' 'The Ring Two,' and 'Team America World Police.'" NPD
plans to launch an ongoing PC survey of 40,000 panelist volunteers
called MovieWatch Digital in the fourth quarter of 2005, which will
monitor consumer interaction with digital video files.

o EU Urges
Member States to Speed Up Digital Switchover
Brussels -- The European Commission issued a report on Tuesday
urging EU member states to speed up the switchover from analog to
digital broadcasting. The report proposed a deadline of early 2012
for phasing out traditional analog terrestrial broadcasting and
called for a coordinated approach to making freed-up spectrum
available across the EU. The Commission said digital broadcasting
provided improved picture quality, better sound, better portable and
mobile reception, more TV and radio channels and enhanced
information services. What's more, digital broadcasting uses
spectrum more efficiently and would free up capacity for other uses,
such as new broadcasting and mobile telephony services, the
Commission said.

o NBC to Launch
Hourly Podcast News Updates in June
New York -- NBC News announced on Tuesday that it plans to begin
delivering hourly news updates via podcast, beginning in June. The
NBC podcasts, accessible at MSNBC.com, will include news and
business headlines from MSNBC.com, in addition to clips from
"Today," "NBC Nightly News," "Hardball with Chris Matthews" and
"Countdown with Keith Olbermann." The technology will let users
subscribe to the audio news feeds and have then automatically
downloaded to their iPod or other portable MP3 player. "Whether you
are heading out the door for your commute, at the gym working out or
simply want to have the freedom to take the headlines with you, this
is for you," said NBC News president Neal Shapiro. MSNBC.com
publisher and general manager Charlie Tillinghast added, "With the
proven success and leadership of our free video, 41 million streams
in the month of April alone, podcasting NBC and MSNBC features was a
natural next step in serving relevant news to our viewers."

o Winamp
Plug-in Allows Songs to be Offloaded from iPod Players
San Francisco -- A software program for Windows allows users to
transfer songs off of their iPod portable music players, Wired News
reported on Tuesday. In a bid to prevent piracy, Apple does not
allow songs downloaded onto an iPod to then be transferred off of
the device to any PC. The ml_iPod application -- initially developed
by Justin Frankel, creator of the Winamp music player software, and
later taken over by U.K. computer science student Will Fisher -- is
a plug-in lets users manage their iPod songs in Winamp and also move
them off of the device, if they so choose. "I firmly believe you
should have the right to transfer your music with any application
you like and if this requires software which circumvents DRM
(digital rights management), then I don't believe this is ethically
wrong," Fisher told Wired News. "I trust our users to use this
freedom responsibly and to not steal music."
