o U.S. Increasing Pressure on Piracy Havens of Russia, China

Washington -- Several U.S. senators have increased pressure on the leaders of Russia and China to crack down on the rampant movie and software piracy in their countries, CNET News.com reported. Both countries were recently placed on the U.S. Trade Representative's (USTR) "priority watch list" of countries it considers havens for piracy. "Before Russia enters the (World Trade Organization), many of us will have to be convinced that the Russian government is serious about cracking down on the theft of intellectual property," Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said during a hearing on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the USTR's general counsel, James Mendenhall, told News.com the agency is meeting with a Chinese delegation this week to discuss issues including piracy. "We're going to be issuing a request through WTO rules seeking additional information from China on the status of enforcement in China," said Mendenhall.

o Report: 40% of Youth Market Receptive to Ad-Supported Mobile Video

Overland Park, Kan. -- Among males aged 13-34, music is the most appealing wireless multimedia service, followed by mobile TV and video, and multiplayer 3D gaming, according to a 1,000-participant survey conducted by The Management Network Group. The study also found that 40% of respondents said they would be receptive to mobile video clips that were free to watch but required them to also view multimedia advertisements, while under 20% were interested in mobile video monthly subscription services. Thirty-five per cent of respondents reported strong interest in downloading music to their cell phones, while 21% were very interested in mobile multiplayer games. "The new generation of consumers is demanding greater choices, a more personalized telecommunications experience and will influence the direction that carriers will need to take as 3G and future mobile technology is delivered to the marketplace," said TMNG chairman and CEO Rich Nespola.

The first two Song Records artists to be featured will be Artemis signees Better Than Ezra and Jaguar Wright, with new artists to be added each quarter. o Briefly Noted:

(Sunnyvale, Calif.) Yahoo on Thursday launched a beta version of a new e-mail photo-sharing service called PhotoMail. The service allows users to insert up to 300 photos into the body of an e-mail; these images are compressed to "thumbnail" size, while the full-size versions are automatically loaded to a sender's Yahoo Photos online storage account. The service also lets users add captions and borders to pictures, and adjust their size and quality within the e-mail application. Yahoo said PhotoMail will benefit users by eliminating the need to worry about file sizes and send photos as attachments in multiple e-mails.

(Los Angeles) Promo Only MPE and partner Destiny Media Technologies announced on Thursday that RCA Music Group used their technology to securely distribute "American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood's first single, "Inside Your Heaven," over the Internet to radio stations. Promo Only's system uniquely encrypts each track so that only authorized recipients with installed Promo Only software can access them. "We chose Promo Only MPE to deliver this vital track to radio because we feel that they present an extremely fast and dependable means of getting our music out," said Adrian Moreira, VP of adult format promotion for RCA Music Group. "We knew that this track had to be made available immediately after the winner was announced and Promo Only MPE provided us with the ability to reach who we needed to reach moments after America chose its next 'Idol'."

(San Diego) Data storage firm Iomega announced this week that it has been granted a patent for a new nanotechnology-based optical data storage technology the company says could potentially yield 800GB discs, or about 40 to 100 times the capacity of current DVDs. The patent covers "a novel technique of encoding data on the surface of a DVD by using reflective nano-structures to encode data in a highly multi-level format." San Diego-based Iomega said the new technology would also provide data transfer rates 5-30 times faster than today's DVDs.

(London) MobiTV, a provider of live mobile TV delivery technology, announced on Thursday the expansion of its services in Europe with the U.K launch of mobile operator Orange's 3G mobile TV service. The Orange UK service is initially compatible with the Nokia 6680 phone, and will offer subscribers video content from providers including ITN News, CNN International, Cartoon Network and Extreme Sports Mobile for about $18 a month.

(Los Angeles) Coding Technologies, a developer of audio compression technology (aacPlus), on Thursday announced the formation of the Internet Surround Music Project, to promote the creation and distribution of multichannel music online. Initial members of the project include AOL's Winamp, software developers Cakewalk, Minnetonka and Native Instruments, and recording artists Amon Tobin and Richard Devine. The group has set up a website, Tuner2.com, where artists can post tracks recorded in 5.1 surround format, and also download free aacPlus encoder software from Coding Technologies.

(New York) Video game publisher Atari said on Thursday that it has signed up 65 well-known graffiti artists to lend their artwork to "Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure" title, slated for release in September. In addition, six graffiti artists -- Cope 2, Futura, Shepard Fairey, Seen, Smith and T-kid -- will lend their likenesses and appear as "in-game mentors." (New York) SI.com, the website for Sports Illustrated magazine, recently published an article on Internet poker, which it claims may now be more popular than pornography among college-aged male Web surfers. "I'll play 1,500 hands online in six hours," "Grayson", a sophomore attending the University of Florida on an academic scholarship, told SI.com. "No big deal. I chat online or watch TV at the same time.… Last week I basically wrote a 10-page paper for my Politics in Film and Fiction course while playing two hands at a time."

(Washington) The Washington Post on Thursday reported on the dilemma newspapers are facing when deciding whether to charge users for access to their online editions: free access means more readers, but paid access means potentially greater profits. While The Wall Street Journal currently has 730,000 paying subscribers, and The New York Times will begin charging $50 a year for access to its online editorials and archives in September, the Los Angeles Times recently decided to make its previously $60 a year online entertainment guide free to readers.

(San Francisco) CNET News.com on Thursday published a point-counterpoint on the issue of the "broadcast flag," a digital TV anti-piracy technology that was endorsed by the entertainment industry and implemented by the FCC, but recently struck down by a federal appeals court. Writing in favor of the technology was Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) CEO Dan Glickman: "In the end, it will be the consumers who suffer the most if broadcast flag is not mandated for the digital era… Without proper protections, it will be increasingly difficult to show movies, television shows or even baseball games on free television." In "Why the broadcast flag won't work," media attorney Jim Burger argues that "Imposing the broadcast flag scheme would have been a substantial and increasing burden with little return; moreover, it would have imposed government's heavy regulatory hand on heretofore largely unregulated devices, thus slowing progress, increasing cost and adding unnecessary complexity to consumer products."
