o Report: U.S. Online Sales to Rise 20% in 2006 to Eclipse $211 Billion

Washington - U.S. online sales are projected to rise 20% this year to eclipse $211 billion, after surpassing $100 billion just three years ago, according to a report from Shop.org conducted by market research firm Forrester Research. Spending on online travel will account for $73 billion of this total, while the largest non-travel spending categories will include computer hardware and software ($16.8 billion), autos and auto parts ($15.9 billion), and apparel, accessories and footwear ($13.8 billion). Last year, online sales rose 25%, to $176.4 billion. Excluding travel, online retail sales in 2005 rose 28% to $113.6 billion, representing 4.7 percent of total retail sales. The report also found that more than two-thirds of retailers now have consistent pricing across brick-and-mortar and online retail channels, and almost half allow consumers to buy and redeem gift cards both online and in stores. "Retailers have been focusing on integrating their websites and stores to better serve their customers, which is paying off for companies in the form of higher sales," said Shop.org executive director Scott Silverman.

o Google Accounts for Half of All U.S. Web Searches in April

New York - Passing a significant milestone, Google accounted for half of all U.S. Web searches in April, according to data from Nielsen/NetRatings. Google's 50% of Internet search traffic was followed by Yahoo (22%) and MSN (11%). While Yahoo's share of search traffic remained flat year over year, and MSN's dipped slightly, Google's share increased by 3%. "We can continue to expect new features, improved functionality and rewards programs from the top search providers as they compete to win consumers' loyalty," said Michael Lanz, vice president of search industry solutions for Nielsen/NetRatings. "There is also opportunity for smaller providers to fulfill targeted search needs."

o Venezuelan Lawmakers Protest Purported Anti-Chavez Video Game

Caracas, Venezuela - Lawmakers in Venezuela have complained that video game developer Pandemic Studios' upcoming "Mercenaries 2: World in Flames" title is propaganda that depicts a violent overthrow of President Hugo Chavez, Reuters reported. "A power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a war zone," reads a description of the game on Pandemic's website. "It sends a message to Americans: you have a danger next door, here in Latin America, and action must be taken. It's a justification for an imperialist aggression," said Venezuelan lawmaker Gabriela Ramirez. "I think the U.S. government knows how to prepare campaigns of psychological terror so they can make things happen later," Congressman Ismael Garcia said.

o Video Game Touted as Muslim Militant Recruiting Tool Revealed as Joke

The Hague - A video game that the U.S. government said was a "modded" version of Electronic Arts' "Battlefield 2" created by Muslim militants as a recruitment tool has been exposed to be a joke created by a 25-year-old Dutch gamer, Reuters reported. At a May 4 Congressional hearing, a Defense Department contractor paid $7 million to monitor militant websites called the homemade game a terrorist recruitment tool. "Samir," the game's creator, told Reuters he altered the game as a joke and to show off his production skills. "Government agencies should do more research before coming to conclusions," Samir told Reuters. "The movie wasn't what they presented it to be." Samir added that part of the modded game's soundtrack was taken from the satiric film "Team America: World Police."

o Stream Theory Sues Three Firms for Patent Infringement

Irvine, Calif. - Stream Theory, a provider of streaming application technology that enables software-on-demand, announced this week that it has filed patent infringement claims against three companies: Softricity, AppStream and Exent. Filed with the U.S. Patent Office in 1997, Stream Theory's patent describes a "method and apparatus to allow remotely located computer programs and/or data to be accessed on a local computer in a secure, time-limited manner, with persistent caching." Irvine, Calif.-based Stream Theory's technology has been used by game publishers and developers including Atari, PlayFirst and Team6 Game Studios to deliver games online.

o Justice Department Clears Intelsat Acquisition of PanAmSat

Washington - Clearing a major regulatory hurdle, Intelsat, the large D.C.-based provider of satellite services, said on Friday that the Justice Department's Antitrust Division has approved its $3.2 billion acquisition of Connecticut-based rival PanAmSat. The deal, first announced last August, remains under review by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). With the clearance, the Justice Department in effect ruled that the deal will not pose any serious threat to competition in the sector. The combined company would have a fleet of 53 satellites, and serve customers in more than 220 countries and territories.

o Survey: 77% of U.S. Adults Go Online

Rochester, N.Y. - The number of U.S. adults who go online at home, in the office, at school or elsewhere has grown 5% in the past year to an estimated 172 million, or 77% of all adults, according to the latest Harris Poll. The percentage of adults online has risen from 66% in 2002, 57% in 2000 and 9% in 1995, when Harris began tracking Internet use. The proportion of adults who have Internet access at home has risen to 70%, up from 66% in 2005 ad 55% in 2002, while the percentage of those who have Internet access at work remained flat, at 35% year over year, compared with 30% in 2002. The poll also found that as Internet penetration rises, the demographic profile of Internet users is coming more in line with that of the nation as a whole. Data showed that 14% of online adults earn less than $25,000 (compared with 19% of all adults), and 39% of online adults (compared with 47% overall) did not go to college.
