o Radio Giant Clear Channel to Launch Consumer Broadband Internet Service

Cuupertino, Calif. -- Packeteer, a provider of bandwidth allocation
technology, announced on Wednesday that Clear Channel, the nation's
largest radio station owner, will use its technology to launch a broadband
Internet service in 18 U.S. markets this year. The Delta V service works
in conjunction with users' existing ISPs, allowing them to keep their
current email addresses, while adding high-speed download capability to
their accounts at speeds around 256 Kbps. Cupertino, Calif.-based
Packeteer's technology actively provisions minimum and maximum bandwidth
to thousands of concurrent Internet access subscribers. The service is
provided through digital television signals and translated in the computer
through a special PCI card, digital TV antenna and proprietary software.

o Mod Chips Enabling Play of Hacked Xbox Games Becoming Available

San Francisco -- An array of "mod chips" that can be inserted into
Microsoft's Xbox to compel the device to ignore copyright protection and
read pirated game discs are beginning to hit the market, CNET News.com
reported on Wednesday. The chips reportedly can defeat copy-protection
software embedded into the device by Santa Clara, Calif.-based
Macrovision, enabling the Xbox to read pirated game discs and copy DVD
discs that use Macrovision's copy-protection scheme. However, installing
the chip requires any interested parties to disassemble the Xbox and
perform delicate soldering procedures. Then copies of cracked Xbox games
must be located, and few reports of such games have surfaced thus far. One
mod chip, called the Xtender, is now available for $65 from several chip
dealers. A Microsoft representative said the company is looking into ways
to block distribution of the chips. "The Xbox team takes the intellectual
and copyright property of Microsoft and its partners very seriously," the
representative told CNET News.com.

30 Reasons to Attend Jupiter Plug.IN -- July 8-9 - NYC

Reason #19: Home Networks are no longer "next year's issue."
PC-based home networks are taking off right now, with about 23-million US

broadband throughout the home, networks will also begin to create
opportunities to extend services to other devices in every room. Jupiter
believes that music is the killer app for these networks - and will spell
dramatic changes to the industry.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Wednesday reported on the phenomenon of
"lowercase" music, or electronically produced musical compositions that
intersperse very quiet sounds with periods of silence. Often composed on
scientific subjects, such as amplifying the sound of a populated anthill
or the sounds associated with folding paper, the fringe musical genre is
enabled and created mainly using technology such as Daly City,
Calif.-based DigiDesign's Pro Tools audio editing software, and Macintosh
computers.

(Manhasset, N.Y.) A recent story in the electronics industry trade
publication EE Times reported on the efforts of Chinese and Taiwanese DVD
player manufacturers to develop a proprietary DVD disc format, in order to
evade paying royalty fees to companies such as Philips, Sony and
Matsushita, which hold patents on the original DVD format. A Chinese
standard called Advanced Versatile Disc (AVD) and a Taiwanese standard
called Enhanced Versatile Disc (EVD) both aim to offer greater media
storage capacity than existing DVDs, but another admitted objective is to
avoid the $15-$20 royalty fee on each DVD player manufactured and sold in
China and Taiwan.
