o Report: Internet Ad Revenue Hit Record $3.9 Billion in First Quarter

New York - Internet ad revenue hit a new record of $3.9 billion in the first quarter of 2006, a 38% increase over the $2.8 billion recorded in the first quarter of 2005, according to a report from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Online ads also generated 6% more revenue than the $3.6 billion total from the fourth quarter of 2005. "The steady growth of online advertising is a clear indication that marketers continue to believe in the opportunities and effectiveness that this medium delivers in reaching and engaging their consumers," said IAB chief executive Greg Stuart. "The interactive advertising industry remains committed to the creation of a world class medium with best-of-breed standards, measurement guidelines, research and ad products for marketers and agencies."

o CNN, Cartoon Network Sue Cablevision Over Network DVR Service

New York - Time Warner's Cartoon Network and CNN networks have joined the major Hollywood movie studios and TV networks in suing Cablevision, over the cable TV provider's planned network-based digital video recorder service, Reuters reported. Cablevision is developing a system where subscribers would request that Cablevision "record" a program, which would then be accessible from the company's servers, rather than as a file stored on a home set-top box, such as TiVo. The studios and networks argue that the recordings constitute a sale of their programming, and that Cablevision should pay a license fee or royalties for the ability to offer such a service. Cablevision said in a statement that the lawsuit reflects that the entertainment companies don't understand exactly how the service -- which it plans to trial next week -- will work.

o Bulgarian Police Shut Down Music, Movie Piracy Site

Sofia, Bulgaria - Authorities in Bulgaria have shut down what they say was one of Europe's largest piracy websites, where users could pay $2.50 a month for access to unlimited downloads of 20 million songs and hundreds of movies, Reuters reported. Two men were arrested and charged with illegally distributing the media files on Arenabg.com, which authorities estimated caused the entertainment industry $30 million in damages. "These people are among the biggest Internet pirates in Europe," Liliana Yosifova, spokeswoman for the Sofia Investigators' Office, told Reuters. "We are talking about big losses here."

o FTC Settles With Seller of "100% Legal" File-Sharing Tutorial

Washington - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has settled charges against a website operator who claimed the file-sharing network tutorial he was selling was "100 percent legal." The FTC sued Cashier Myricks in September 2005 for selling his $24.95 tutorial, which did not contain file-sharing software, but taught users how to download music and movies for free using popular programs. The settlement calls for Myricks to refund over $15,000 to more than 600 customers. It also bars misrepresentations about file-sharing products or services, and requires that the operator disclose the civil and criminal liability risks of downloading copyrighted material without the owner's permission.

o Google Launches Video Ads on Partner Websites

Mountain View, Calif. - Google has expanded its lucrative Web-based advertising network to include the ability for advertisers to purchase video ads on its publisher network, CNET News.com reported. The ads do not automatically launch when a user visits a Web page; instead, a user must click on the video ad, which itself contains a link to the advertiser's site. Advertisers bid for placement on sites that accept Google video ads using the company's automated auction system, and pay only when users click on the videos.

o Warner, Amazon Let Users Vote on Potential DVD Releases

Burbank, Calif. - Warner Home Video announced on Tuesday the launch of DVD Decision 2006, a joint project with online retailer Amazon.com that will ask movie fans to vote on which Warner titles they want to see released on DVD. Warner and Amazon nominated 30 films from Warner Bros.' film library; the ten that receive the most votes will then be made available for pre-order on August 8. All of the chosen films will be re-mastered and feature added bonus features. Among the 30 titles nominated for DVD release are "Al Capone," "Cimarron," "April in Paris" and "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing." Warner Home Video said its two previous DVD Decision polls drew more than a quarter million votes and sold nearly half a million units upon release.

o Live Nation Acquires Stake in Concert Productions International

Los Angeles - Live Nation, a concert promotion and digital distribution company, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired controlling interest in the touring division of Concert Productions International (CPI), which has organized global tours for the Rolling Stones, U2 and Pink Floyd. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Los Angeles-based Live Nation, a joint venture between AOL, XM Satellite Radio and AEG Live, said that CPI chief executive Michael Cohl has joined Live Nation's board of directors. CPI will continue to operate as a separate unit, and will spearhead Live Nation's efforts to secure rights to content beyond the live show, such as the live concert recordings its Instant Live unit distributes on CD to concertgoers at the venue following the performance.

o DVD Forum to Implement Regional Coding for HD DVD

Seattle -
The DVD Forum, a group of companies backing Toshiba's next-generation HD DVD format, has decided to implement a regional coding system for HD DVD movies similar to the system in place for current DVDs. The first release of HD DVD players lacks such technology, which ensures that discs purchased in one region cannot be played on players in another region. However, the DVD Forum is working with studios to develop a new regional coding system for HD DVD. Sony's rival Blu-ray Disc format will feature regional coding of content, but shrink the number of regions from seven to three; North America, South America and Asia (excluding China); Europe and Africa; and Russia, China and elsewhere.
