o Swedish Police Seize Servers,
Shut Down P2P Site The Pirate Bay
Stockholm, Sweden - Police in Sweden have raided 10
locations, seized computer servers and shut down The Pirate Bay, a
popular free file-sharing site, according to a statement from the
Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Police spokesman Ulf
Goranzon told the Associated Press that police detained three
Swedes, ages 22, 24, and 28, on suspicion of violating copyright
laws. The MPAA filed a criminal complaint in Sweden in November 2004
against The Pirate Bay, which offers links to media files available
for download on the BitTorrent peer-to-peer network. The MPAA said
the site hosted 157,000 illegal files, including the films "The Da
Vinci Code" and "Mission: Impossible III," and estimated the site
takes in $60,000 in advertising per month. "The actions today taken
in Sweden serve as a reminder to pirates all over the world that
there are no safe harbors for Internet copyright thieves," said MPAA
chairman and CEO Dan Glickman. "Intellectual property theft is a
problem for film industries all over the world and we are glad that
the local government in Sweden has helped stop The Pirate Bay from
continuing to enable rampant copyright theft on the Internet."

o XM Halts
Shipments of Some Radios Over FCC Emission Concerns
Washington - XM Satellite Radio, a provider of
subscription radio programming with 6.5 million subscribers,
announced on Wednesday that it has suspended shipments of some of
its radios to retailers, after the FCC gave the company notice that
the FM transmitter on the devices did not meet its emission
standards. XM said that it is exploring making changes to radios
including the Delphi XM SKYFi2 and Audiovox Xpress, such as adding
small attachments that reduce emissions through the antenna or
cigarette lighter adapter. Washington-based XM said the suspension
does not affect any radios that are installed by auto manufacturers
or dealers.

o Report:
Internet Ad Spending Rose 19.4% in First Quarter to $2.31 Billion
New York - A 19.4% increase in Internet ad spending helped
fuel a 5.2% overall increase in U.S. ad spending during the first
quarter of 2006, according to a report from market research firm TNS
Media Intelligence. Internet ad spending accounted for $2.31 of the
$34.9 billion spent on advertising in the U.S. in the first three
months of the year. While Internet ad spending saw the greatest
increase, other growth areas included network TV (12.3%, $6.52
billion), consumer magazines (5.9%, $4.83 billion) and
Spanish-language media (14.2%, $1.05 billion). Sectors that
experienced declines in ad spending included local newspapers
(-6.1%, $5.55 billion) and radio (-1.2%, $2.34 billion). "The
moderate increase in Q1 advertising expenditures fell a bit short of
our previously released growth forecast of 5.5 percent," said TNS
Media Intelligence president and CEO Steven Fredericks.

o Survey:
54% of Online Adults Plan to Buy Portable Media Device
Arlington, Va. - One in three adults who use the Internet,
or 54.1 million Americans, owns a portable digital media device, and
more than half (54%) plan to buy one over the next year, according
to a report from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
Listening to music is currently the most popular activity on such
devices (94%). However, while only 15% of players shipped in 2005
could play video, that percentage is expected to double this year,
for the estimated 28 million portable players that will ship in
2006. "Digital media players that can house entire libraries of
digital audio and video content have remained a niche market until
now. Results of this study indicate that this trend is gaining
critical mass," said Steve Koenig, CEA's senior manager of industry
analysis. The study also found that less than half of portable
device owners currently purchase content for their devices online,
but 71% plan to buy music or video online in the coming year.
