o Ex-Finance Chief of Enron
Video-on-Demand Firm Found Guilty
Houston - The former chief financial officer of Enron
Broadband Services (EBS), the bankrupt company's venture with
Blockbuster that was said to be developing an Internet
video-on-demand service, was convicted by a jury Wednesday on
conspiracy and fraud charges, Reuters reported. Kevin Howard faces
up to 25 years in prison for his role in illicitly generating more
than $110 million in revenue tied to the video-on-demand project,
which Enron shuttered several months before its larger accounting
scandals surfaced in 2001. Michael Krautz, a former EBS accountant
and Howard's co-defendant, was acquitted of the same charges Howard
faced. Two other EBS executives will be retried in connection with
the failed company later this year. Howard's conviction comes a week
after fellow former Enron executives Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling
were convicted on conspiracy and fraud charges.

Networks Sue Truck Stop Chain Over TV Commercial-Swapping Device
San Francisco - Several major TV networks have sued the
Flying J truck stop chain for copyright infringement, over its use
of a device that replaces the broadcasters' ads on televisions in
its truck stops with its own commercials, Wired News reported on
Thursday. Flying J installed devices made by Florida-based segOne
between its DISH Network satellite TV set-tops and televisions that
enable it to replace regular TV ads with its own, for things like
the American Truckers Legal Association, Volvo 880 trucks and
Motorkote. The segOne devices anticipate commercial breaks and
switch the channel to a private feed of ads, returning to the
broadcaster's feed after two minutes. Flying J spokeswoman Virginia
Parker told Wired News that the company consulted an attorney before
installing the segOne devices, and is "considering all of its
options at this time." The truck stop chain claims on its website
that the ads can reach up to 140,000 consumers per month at each of
its 177 locations.

Tech Columnist Reviews Disney's MovieBeam Service
New York - The New York Times on Thursday published a
review of Disney's MovieBeam service, which uses a portion of the

Currently available in 29 markets, the service charges no monthly
fee, and asks $4 for new releases and $2 for older titles. "MovieBeam's
designers have analyzed nearly every aspect of movie delivery in an
attempt to find a drawback-free solution: price, delivery speed,
picture quality, movie variety, movie availability, movie timeliness
and simplicity. The result may fill only the nichiest niche. But the
movie-rental business generates $10 billion a year; MovieBeam will
no doubt be happy with even a very small slice of that pie," The
Times concludes.

the software. Despite the "unmitigated disaster" of the Connect
