o Top Executives Depart Major Record Label Sony BMG

New York - Major record label Sony BMG Music Entertainment announced on Thursday that the chairman and president of its Sony Music Label Group have resigned from the company, part of an ongoing shake-up of the company's executives since the 2004 merger of Sony and BMG. Sony Music chairman Don Ienner and president Michele Anthony, both industry veterans, stepped down on Thursday. The New York Times reported that the company has seen much infighting between U.S. executives at Sony Music and BMG since the merger of the labels, over executive salaries and marketing of artists. The company also faced an embarrassing and costly recall of CDs -- and still faces several lawsuits and an FTC inquiry -- after it was discovered that anti-piracy software embedded on the discs could open computers to malicious attacks. Rob Stringer, chairman and CEO of Sony BMG's U.K. unit, and brother of Sony chairman Howard Stringer, will take over as president of Sony Music Label Group in the U.S. on Sept. 1; Sony BMG COO Tim Bowen will helm the company until then.

o Minnesota Passes Law Fining Minors Who Try to Buy 17+ Video Games

St. Paul, Minn. - Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) yesterday signed a bill into law that slaps a $25 fine on minors who attempt to purchase video games rated "M" for Mature or "AO" for Adults Only. While the law will not fine retailers who sell the games to those under 17, it does require them to post signs informing customers of the new law in their stores. The Entertainment Software Association, a video game industry trade group, said in a statement that it plans to file suit in federal court to have the law overturned. "Six courts in five years, including the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals which governs Minnesota, have struck down similar laws, ruling that they were unconstitutional," said ESA president Doug Lowenstein. "This has resulted in legal costs of nearly one million dollars to the taxpayers of the states in which these bills were passed, and countless wasted hours spent by government officials attempting to defend the laws."
