o Report: Global Media, Entertainment Spending to Hit $1.4 Trillion by 2006

New York -- Despite a slew of dot-com failures, a global advertising
downturn and the effects of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, global
spending on media and entertainment products is expected to reach $1.4
trillion annually by 2006, according to a report released on Tuesday by
PricewaterhouseCoopers. The firm predicts a 5.2 percent compound annual
growth rate over the next five years will break the $1 trillion mark.
Digital distribution of content, aided by rising broadband penetration
will fuel the growth, which will be accompanied by a significant growth in
Internet advertising spending. In the U.S., online ad spending is expected
to grow at a compound annual rate of 10.8 percent, reaching $40 billion by
2006. The firm also noted that piracy and unauthorized use of copyrighted
material will continue to limit growth, especially in recorded music.
"Unless an industry-wide solution is reached, piracy issues will begin
seriously affecting other major entertainment and media sectors, including
filmed entertainment, home video and consumer book publishing,"
Pricewaterhouse Coopers said in a press release.

o $1-Per-Movie Site Movie88.com Relocates to Iran, Re-Launches as Film88

Iran -- Film88.com, a website formerly known as Movie88.com that was shut
down by Taiwanese authorities for offering new release movie downloads at
a cost of $1 each, has re-launched its site, this time operating out of
the country of Iran. Film88 now offers a selection 1,500 movies, available
only as streamed, three-day "rentals" starting at $1. The site is operated
by Broadband Universal Corp. Ltd, "under the laws and jurisdiction of
Iran, with our servers in Iran," according to the "About Us" section of
the site. The section goes on to state that, "Fighting to preserve this
concept and service will not be easy. One of the main issue [sic] is
copyright. For this reason and for the advancement of technology and
innovation, we are prepared to consider paying a percentage of our rental
price to copyright owners as compensation." Film88.com is offering movies
streamed at speeds of 100K, 300K and 500K through RealNetworks'
RealPlayer. Its homepage is currently advertising a free sample -- the
chance to watch "The Mummy Returns" in its entirety.

o Studio, Label Lawsuits Against Kazaa to Add Sharman Networks As Defendant

Los Angeles -- Lawyers for the music and movie companies suing
file-sharing services Kazaa, Morpheus and Grokster revealed intentions to
expand their claims on Monday to include the new owner and distributor of
Kazaa -- Australia-based Sharman Networks, The Los Angeles Times reported
on Tuesday. The inclusion represents the first time that Sharman Networks,
which purchased the software from its Dutch creators Niklas Zennstrom and
Janus Friis, has been named as a party to alleged copyright infringement.
In court on Monday, presiding U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson moved
to limit evidence gathering in the case to a few issues, which he will
decide on later this year, The Times reported. He also ordered Kazaa
creators Zennstrom and Friis to be deposed by plaintiffs' lawyers; the two
previously had said they could not fund a defense and conceded defeat.
Judge Wilson also ordered the lawyers representing Tennessee-based
Streamcast Networks, which operates Morpheus, to continue offering their
services until pretrial motions are decided, despite Streamcast's admitted
inability to pay them.
