o Record Number of E-Books Sold in
First Quarter, Up 46% Over 2003
Chicago -- Publishers report that a record 421,955 e-books were
sold in the first quarter of 2004, with units sold up 46% and
revenues up 28% over the same period a year ago, according to data
from the Open eBook Forum. "This quarter eBooks have hit a new high
mark for sales," said Open eBook Forum president Steve Potash. "eBooks
represent the fastest growing segment of the publishing industry."
The group also on Friday released its e-book bestseller list for the
month of May, with Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code topping the list
for the third straight month.

o Chairman of
Video Game Developer Midway Games Resigns
Chicago -- Video game developer Midway Games announced on Friday
that company chairman Neil D. Nicastro will resign his position,
following the company's June 10 stockholder meeting. "I believe that
Midway is a tremendous company with a bright future, but for
personal and professional reasons the time has come for me to move
on," said Nicastro. Viacom chairman and CEO Sumner Redstone, also
Midway's largest shareholder, said a successor for Nicastro will be
named shortly following the stockholder meeting.

o Report: U.K.
Boasts Nearly 4 Million Broadband Users
London -- A report published this week by telecommunications
regulator Ofcom shows that, by the end of April, nearly 4 million
people in the U.K. had signed up for broadband Internet services,
with nearly1.54 million connections using cable and approximately
2.45 million having DSL. What's more, the report found that about
40,000 people have been signing up for broadband Internet services
every week, as consumers increasingly replace narrowband connections
with faster ones. Figures also show a growing trend among the
British of choosing the PC over the TV, as broadband Internet
services are currently the fastest-growing medium in the British
home. In fact, the average person in the U.K. uses the Internet for
more than 3.5 hours a day, but watches only 2.8 hours of TV, a 12%
decrease compared to last year.

o Summer Movies
Draw More Traffic to Movie Sites
New York, N.Y. -- Internet traffic from home to movie sites jumped
during the week ending May 30, as surfers logged on for the start of
the summer movie blockbusters, according to new statistics from
Nielsen/NetRatings, a provider of Internet audience measurement
services. Traffic to MovieTickets.com surged 66% to 600,000 unique
visitors and traffic to the website for Twentieth Century Fox Film
jumped 26% to 372,000 unique visitors. Twentieth Century Fox's "The
Day After Tomorrow" opened last Friday. Other big winners were
Fandango (up 22%), Movies.com (up 10%) and Internet Movie Database
(up 7%). All five sites garnered more traffic last week as compared
to the same period last year. "With the summer movie season just
beginning, movie sites can expect to see more growth during the
coming months," said Kaizad Gotla, an Internet analyst with Nielsen/NetRatings.

o Briefly Noted: (Los Angeles)
Filmmaker Michael Moore debuted a trailer for his upcoming movie
"Fahrenheit 9/11" on the Web Thursday, but the trailer was
unavailable on Friday "due to overwhelming demand," according to a
note on Moore's website. The controversial politicized film, which
won the Palme d'Or at the recent Cannes Film Festival, will be
released on June 25 in the U.S. by IFC Films and Lions Gate Films.

(Alviso, Calif.) TiVo, a provider of digital video recorder
services, announced on Friday that Eddy Hartenstein, vice chairman
of DirecTV, has resigned from the TiVo board of directors in order
to focus on his responsibilities to the satellite TV provider.
"While I regret that my other obligations prevent me from fulfilling
the duties of a TiVo Director, I look forward to continuing the
strong business relationship between DirecTV and TiVo," said
Hartenstein.

(Fort Collins, Colo.) Otterbox, a developer of handheld device
accessories, announced on Friday the release of its oPod rugged
polycarbonate resin case for Apple's iPod digital music player. The
$49.95 product comes in five colors; the company also expects to
introduce a model for the iPod mini later in the year.

(Redwood City, Calif.) Game developer Electronic Arts on Friday
released its "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" title for
PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and the PC. The
game, based on the recently released movie and J.K. Rowling novel,
was developed by EA's U.K. Studio. It is the first third-party title
to utilize the EyeToy USB camera accessory for PlayStation 2,
enabling players to insert their own image into the game.

(London) Handheld video game maker Gizmondo Europe said on Friday
that game developer Indie Studios will produce a second game for the
device that takes advantage of its GPS functionality. Unlike its
first title, "Colors," which was recently previewed at E3,
Stockholm-based Indie Studios says "City" will be shorter in
duration, enabling players to engage each other in brief challenges
when the game is released in the fourth quarter.

(San Francisco) CNET News.com on Friday reported on the state of
pop-up advertisements, the annoying yet effective ads that
automatically open new browser windows when a user visits a website.
Despite the growing prevalence of software that blocks pop-ups from
firms including Google, Yahoo, AOL, EarthLink and Microsoft -- which
an estimated 30% of Web surfers use -- advertising technology
developers are creating ways to work around the pop-up blocking
software. One technology already in use is the "floating" ad, which,
instead of opening a new browser window, uses dynamic HTML to
overlay an ad on top of website content that cannot be moved or
altered while the ad is being served.
http://makeashorterlink.com/?M11F25A78
(New York) The New York Times recently reported on the market for
pirated e-books on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks and Internet
Relay Chat (IRC) networks. Unlike ripping a CD, to upload a book to
the Internet entails a cumbersome process that includes scanning
each page, running character-recognition software and proofreading.
U.K. Internet piracy tracker Envisional estimates that there are
25,000 to 30,000 pirated titles available, including everything from
"The Da Vinci Code" to "The South Beach Diet" to the latest Harry
Potter novels.
