o Survey: Web is Top Daytime Media, No. 2 at Home

New York - The Web dominates media users' workday, and is also the second most-popular form of media at home, according to a survey conducted by Ball State University's Center for Media Design for the Online Publishers Association. The media usage of 350 participants -- who were between the ages of 18 and 50+ and split evenly across age and race -- was monitored every 15 seconds for 13 hours. At work, the Web reached 54.6% of participants, compared with 21.1% for TV; the report estimated that 17% of overall media consumption was via the Internet. "Based on our real-world observations, it is clear that consumers are consistently online even while they're watching TV or listening to the radio," said OPA president Pam Horan. "Industry data shows that the Web takes up between 20 and 25 percent of consumers' overall media time, but attracts about 8 percent of advertising dollars. While advertisers have been steadily moving to the Web in recent years, this research indicates the shift should be on a much faster pace."

o Swedish Movie Download Site The Pirate Bay Back Up, After Police Raid

Stockholm - A Swedish website that was shut down last week after authorities seized servers as part of a piracy investigation is back up and running, Reuters reported. The Pirate Bay, a site that provides links to music and movie files on the BitTorrent peer-to-peer network, is now functioning off of servers in the Netherlands. Over the weekend, hackers attacked websites for Sweden's police and government, in apparent retaliation for the raid on The Pirate Bay, while hundreds took to the streets and flew pirate flags in a demonstration in Stockholm. The raids on The Pirate Bay by Swedish authorities were undertaken after a formal complaint was filed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), whose member studios' films are available through links from the BitTorrent tracker site.

o Report: Worldwide Online Games Market to Reach $13 Billion in 2011

San Diego - Increased broadband penetration and greater numbers of PCs and connected game consoles will push the worldwide market for online games from $3.4 billion in 2005 to over $13 billion in 2011, according to a report from market research firm DFC Intelligence. The online games market includes both subscriptions to massively multiplayer online games like "World of Warcraft," expected to remain the leading online games category, and the expansion of digital distribution of games, through direct sales to PCs and next-generation to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. DFC also anticipates growth for digital distribution in the form of item sales for casual games, which typically generate most revenue from advertising. "Digital distribution and virtual item sales have started to do very well in certain Asian markets and these distribution models are expected to start having increased success on an international basis," said DFC analyst Alexis Madrigal.

Digi TV Plus plans to launch its PlusTV digital terrestrial TV network in November, and will be the exclusive distributor of MTV in one million Finnish terrestrial households. "In connection with the digitalization of television, the selection of channels available to all domestic households will increase significantly," said PlusTV CEO Vesa Mars.
