o ComScore Raises $20 Million; Buys Media Metrix Assets for $1.5 Million

Reston, Va. -- ComScore Networks, a provider of data on consumers' online
behavior, announced that it has raised $20 million in its fourth round of
funding. Topspin Partners led the investment round; new investor vSpring
Capital and previous investors Accel Partners, JP Morgan Partners/Flatiron
Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, Lehman Brothers Venture Fund and
Adams Street Partners also participated. Separately, Virginia-based
ComScore also announced that it has acquired certain assets of Media
Metrix, a unit of New York-based Jupiter Media Metrix, for $1.5 million.
ComScore will establish a Media Metrix division to operate the unit, and
will open a New York office to accommodate certain Jupiter Media Metrix
employees it will bring on. The company said the $20 million in new
funding will provide capital to support the acquisition and integration of
Media Metrix, fuel continued growth of the company and allow it to pursue
future strategic opportunities.

o Motion Picture Association Moves to Shut Down $1 Movie Site Film88.com

Los Angeles -- Just days after announcing its return to the Web,
Film88.com, a site that let users stream newly released Hollywood movies
for $1, has been shut down through actions taken by the Motion Picture
Association (MPA), CNET News.com reported. The site originally operated
out of Taiwan as Movie88.com and offered whole movie downloads for $1, but
was shut down by Taiwanese authorities and its ISP after a request from
the MPA. The site operators then relocated to Tehran, Iran, where U.S.
copyrights are not recognized. However, its content was delivered via
servers in the Netherlands operated by TrueServer, which took the site
down after receiving a request from the MPA. "We worked with the ISP in
the Netherlands, who did what the overwhelming majority of ISPs do, and
prevented piracy from continuing on their service," Mark Litvack, vice
president and director of worldwide legal affairs for anti-piracy for the
MPA, told CNET News.com. A note on Film88.com now states, "We feel sorry
for our contractor whose proxy/caching was blocked because of somebody's
reaction. (Without Court Order AGAIN!!). Our site is READY now, but we got
[sic] to wait for few hours for our new lines to take place."

o Study: Kazaa Users Inadvertently Sharing Private Files

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Users of Kazaa and other file-sharing services
commonly designate files as "shared" that they would normally want to keep
private, such as email or banking data, according to a recently released
study from Hewlett-Packard's HP Labs. The study, conducted by Nathaniel S.
Good of HP Labs and Aaron Krekelberg of the University of Minnesota, found
that "the majority of the users were unable to tell what files they were
sharing, and sometimes incorrectly assumed they were not sharing any files
when in fact they were sharing all files on their hard drive." Users of
Kazaa and other file-sharing programs are able to stipulate which music,
video or other files on their computers they wish to share or prevent from
being shared with others on the network. However, the HP Labs study
indicates that poor wording and inadequate diagrams that appear during
this part of the Kazaa installation process lead many users to share files
they would otherwise consider personal, private data.

o IMagicTV Shares Move to Nasdaq Small Cap Market

St. John, New Brunswick -- IMagicTV, a provider of digital and interactive
TV software, announced on Friday that its shares will be transferred to
the Nasdaq Small Cap Market. Nasdaq notified the company in March that its
shares were not meeting the $1 minimum requirement for continued listing;
the switch to the Small Cap Market gives the company until Sept. 3 to
regain compliance, or else its shares will likely be entirely delisted
from the exchange. Canada-based IMagicTV provides digital and interactive
TV software to telephone companies and other firms that enables them to
offer to deliver multi-channel digital television and interactive media
services to their subscribers over a broadband network infrastructure.

(Tokyo) Japanese wireless network operator NTT DoCoMo announced that it
has partnered with KG Telecommunications to launch its popular I-mode
wireless data and entertainment service in Taiwan. The service, which
offers users the ability to send email, access the Web and play games on
their cell phones, will be delivered over KG's GPRS wireless network. NTT
DoCoMo's Japanese I-mode service currently claims 33 million users.

(Menlo Park, Calif.) Generic Media, a developer of technology that allows
content providers to publish audio and video once and distribute it across
many platforms, announced on Friday that it will now support Japanese
wireless firm NTT DoCoMo's V-Live Trial Service, a video streaming service
for cell phones and handheld devices. Menlo Park, Calif.-based Generic
Media also announced that The Softbank Group and BB Technologies
Corporation, which operate Yahoo's broadband Internet access service for
consumers in Japan, will begin a trial deployment of its digital media

(San Francisco) CNET News.com on Friday reported on the steps being taken
to eliminate cheating within massively multiplayer online games, where
some players use technological hacks to gain extra powers and eliminate
other players who are no match for their superior, unfair strength. The
phenomenon of cheating in games such as "EverQuest" and "Ultima Online"
threatens the lucrative recurring revenue that players pay each month to
continue playing the games. "We're going to see a lot of investment in
systems with military-grade security," Michael Gartenberg, research
director for Jupiter Media Metrix , told CNET News.com. "Protecting the
integrity of players who invested significant time and money in these
games is going to be very important. Nobody wants to pay a certain amount
of money each month just to be killed off by a troll the minute they log
in."

(New York) The New York Times recently reported on the multitude of
international websites devoting coverage to soccer's World Cup 2002, which
is currently being played in Japan and Korea. With TV feeds of games aired
in the middle of the night, the Web has become a major source of instant
information, although FIFA, soccer's organizing body, allows little video
of games to be streamed online.
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/06/technology/circuits/06SOCC.html

(Beijing) Reuters reported on Friday that the Beijing Evening News, a
Chinese newspaper with a circulation of 1.25 million, translated and
reprinted a spoof story originally appearing in The Onion, a satirical
U.S. paper and website. The original Onion story stated that the U.S.
Congress was debating moving to another city such as Memphis unless a new
Capitol building was built, parodying the plight of many major league
sports teams and their home city stadiums. The Chinese story even copied a
graphic from The Onion depicting a supposed new Capitol design, complete
with retractable dome. Reuters reported that when informed that the story
was false, a Beijing Evening News editor replied, "We would first have to
check that out. If it's indeed fake, I'm sure there will be some form of
correction."
