o InterActiveCorp Sells Stake in
Vivendi to NBC Universal for $3.4 Billion
New York -- InterActiveCorp/IAC, the company run by media tycoon
Barry Diller that owns Ask Jeeves, Citysearch, Ticketmaster and
other firms, announced on Wednesday that it will sell its 5.4% stake
in Vivendi Universal Entertainment to NBC Universal for $3.4
billion. The deal effectively ends a long-running legal dispute
between Diller and Vivendi executives, over tax issues stemming from
the companies' connections to one another. "We have put a definite
end to any kind of relationship between Vivendi Universal
Entertainment and Barry Diller's company InterActive," said Vivendi
CEO Jean-Bernard Levy. As part of the deal, IAC will receive $100
million in advertising for its companies across NBC Universal's
networks over the next three years. IAC said it will come out of the
deal with an after-tax gain of approximately $330 million.

o U.S.
Independent Record Labels Form New Trade Group
New York -- A consortium of U.S. independent record labels has
joined together to form the American Association of Independent
Music (A2IM), a trade group that aims to "promote the significant
market share of its combined membership," and "urge government and
business to support fair trade practices, including equal access to
the media and the marketplace, on par with the largest companies in
the industry." Some 125 record labels are now members of A2IM.
Noting that over 30% of Internet radio play is derived from
independent label artists, Steve Gottlieb, CEO of TVT Records and an
A2IM board member, told CNET News.com: "Manufactured pop culture is
disintegrating before your eyes as the Net takes hold, but some of
these institutional biases hold on and continue into new media … Any
arrangement that treats music differently by virtue of it being
owned by multinationals is not a good strategy and is doomed to
fail."

o Toshiba
Perfects Recordable HD DVD Discs, Ends Talks With Sony
Tokyo -- Japanese consumer electronics firm Toshiba announced on
Wednesday that it has developed a recordable disc for its
next-generation, high-capacity DVD format, called HD DVD. A group of
four disc makers -- including Hitachi Maxell and Mitsubishi Kagaku
Media/Verbatim -- has successfully tested mass production lines for
the 15GB write-once discs, which utilize a new organic dye
specifically developed for blue-laser applications. Toshiba is in
competition for the lead in next-generation DVD with Sony, which
developed the rival Blu-ray disc format. The two companies had been
in negotiations to potentially avoid a "format war" like the one
seen between the competing Beta and VHS videocassette formats in the
1980s, but Toshiba said on Wednesday it doesn't plan to resuscitate
the stalled talks. "We won't talk from our side," Toshiba corporate
senior vice president Yoshihide Fujii told MarketWatch. Toshiba and
partners plan to begin shipping HD DVD players in the fall, with HD
DVD recorders to follow in the spring of 2006.

o Report:
Apple to Launch iTunes Store in Japan in August
Tokyo -- Apple Computer plans to launch an iTunes Music Store in
Japan in August, Reuters reported, citing a report in the Japanese
Nihon Keizai newspaper. While major record label Sony Music
Entertainment has yet to agree to licensing terms for including its
songs on the service, other labels including Avex Group, Columbia
Music Entertainment and Toshiba-EMI have signed on. Apple plans to
offer between 500,000 and 1 million songs on the service, for about
$1.40 per song -- below the $1.95 Sony currently charges at its Mora
Japanese download store, which offers 200,000 songs.

o Disney
Acquires U.K. Interactive TV Games Maker Minds Eye Productions
North Hollywood, Calif. -- Walt Disney Internet Group announced on
Wednesday that it has acquired U.K.-based Minds Eye Productions, a
developer of interactive TV games. Financial terms of the deal were
not disclosed. Founded in 1995, Minds Eye has created interactive TV
versions of "Monopoly" and "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," in
addition to the Disney-branded interactive TV games available on the
"Disney Channel Play" channel on U.K. satellite TV service Sky.
Minds Eye will maintain its 20-person staff and current offices in
Milton Keynes. "This acquisition allows us to build on our
successful Disney branded iTV game service and shows our commitment
to this market," said Mark Handler, executive vice president and
managing director, Walt Disney Internet Group International.

o TiVo,
Microsoft Enable TV Show Transfer to Portable Media Centers
Dallas -- TiVo and Microsoft on Wednesday announced an upgrade to
the TiVoToGo service, enabling users to transfer TV shows recorded
on a TiVo onto a Windows Mobile-based portable device, like a
smartphone or Portable Media Center. TiVo owners could already
transfer recorded shows to a Windows XP-based laptop or PC; the new
feature now allows them to further transfer shows from a
Windows-based computer to the portable, Windows Mobile-based
devices. Manufacturers including Dell, HP and Samsung have rolled
out Portable Media Centers, which cost around $500 and can store and
playback audio, video and photos.

America Online said on Wednesday that it has reached a deal to
integrate advertiser listings from YellowPages.com, SBC
SMARTpages.com and BellSouth RealPages.com onto its own service. The
deal will bring a wider audience to advertisers, as well as greatly
increase the number of listings on the AOL Yellow Pages product,
which is carried across AOL's subscription service, as well as
AOL.com, and the Netscape and CompuServe services. AOL called local
search a "key growth sector" for Internet companies, quoting a study
by The Kelsey Group estimating that 70% of U.S. households use the
Internet as an information source when shopping locally for products
and services.

of animated greetings and ringtones, ranging from celebrity voice
tones to Sportz Tonez -- which emulate the actual sounds of the game

(Seattle) Overpeer, a unit of digital media services provider
Loudeye that develops peer-to-peer anti-piracy technologies,
announced on Wednesday that it has acquired a patent for technology
used to "spoof" media files on file-sharing networks from the
University of Tulsa. "The technology covered by this patent can
impair the ability of peer-to-peer users from illegitimately
acquiring copyrighted files," the company said. Record labels and
movie studios have used Overpeer's services to deter copyright
infringement; Overpeer seeds file-sharing networks with "spoof"
files of actual songs or movies that are fake, or in some instances,
contain copyright infringement warnings.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Wednesday reported on the upcoming
Japanese release of adult videos on Universal Media Disc (UMD),
Sony's disc format for its PSP handheld game device. The videos,
officially licensed by Sony, are distributed by producers including
Glay'z and hmp, and will sell for between $18 and $35. Titles slated
for release include "Big-Breasted Nurse Mitsu Amai" and "Lolita
Pick-Up Special 5." The article notes that even though UMD releases
such as "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and "House of Flying Daggers"
have each sold more than 100,000 units in the U.S., "it's unlikely
we'll see porn with the PSP logo in the states."
