o Sony, Pioneer Delay Release of First Blu-ray DVD Players

Tokyo - Sony has delayed the release of its first next-generation Blu-ray Disc player from later this month until mid-August, according to a note on its Sony Style site. The $1,000 player was initially slated to ship in June, but that date was postponed until late July. Samsung still plans to launch its first Blu-ray player on June 25.

o Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" Breaks Single-Week Download Sales Record

New York - Epic Records recording artist Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" broke the single-week download sales record last week, The New York Times reported on Monday. The song, which sold 266,500 downloads at online retailers, was not initially included on the album "Oral Fixation Vol. 2," but was added as part of a recent re-release of the album. Before the re-release, the song was offered exclusively as a download to Verizon Wireless customers, and also promoted on Yahoo Music -- which hosted an online contest where users could submit video of themselves dancing to the song. The resulting video was viewed over a million times, and helped fuel demand for the single once it was released to digital retailers like iTunes.

o Oklahoma Gov. Signs Video Game Bill Into Law

Oklahoma City, Okla. - Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry last week signed into law a bill that makes it a felony to sell or rent violent video games to minors in the state. The law puts violent games to a similar legal test as is used to classify some pornography as obscenity, applying "contemporary community standards." According to the law, games fall under this category if their use of violence is "glamorized or gratuitous, used to shock or stimulate, not contextually relevant to the material, trivializes the serious nature of realistic violence, does not demonstrate the consequences or effects of realistic violence, depicts a lead character who resorts to violence freely, uses brutal weapons to inflict the maximum amount of pain and damage or endorses or glorifies the use of excessive weaponry or torture." The law will require retailers to place such violent games behind special racks not visible to minors. "Some video games glorify violence to a degree seldom seen in even the bloodiest movies," said Gov. Henry. "While parents have the ultimate responsibility for what their children do and see, this legislation is another tool to ensure that our young people are not saturated in violence." The law is set to take effect on November 1; it is likely to face a lawsuit from the video game industry, which has successfully sued to have similar laws overturned in several states.

o Video-Sharing Site One True Media Raises $5 Million

Redwood City, Calif. - One True Media, a developer of an online video-sharing community, announced on Monday that it has raised $5 million in its first round of venture capital financing from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Since launching in December 2005, the company has registered 335,000 members, who can upload, edit, add music and share their personal videos. The company has partnered with BabyCenter, an online resource for new parents, as well as blogging software developer SixApart on the family-targeted site. "Everyday consumers are shooting millions of photos and videos but they have no way to combine all that media into a compelling story that will make their friends or family laugh or cry," said One True Media CEO Mark Moore. "We want to make it easy for people to communicate the emotion that is often hard to see in still photos. We eliminate the complexity of editing and mixing digital media, so that everybody can be the director or star of their own video." The company did not disclose plans for the new funds.

o N.Y. Times: Students' High-Pitched Ringtone Inaudible to Teachers

New York - The New York Times recently reported on a ringtone gaining popularity with students, which uses a high-pitched frequency inaudible to most adults as a means of circumventing classroom bans on calls and text messages. Students reportedly borrowed the idea from an invention called the Mosquito, which blares the 17-kilohertz frequency outside of convenience stores in a bid to repel loitering teenagers. The tone capitalizes on the phenomenon that adults lose some of their high-frequency hearing as they enter early middle age.
