o Digital Distribution Firm Liquid Audio Acquired by Alliance Entertainment

Redwood City, Calif. -- Liquid Audio, a provider of digital music
distribution services, announced on Thursday that it has entered into an
agreement to merge with Alliance Entertainment Corp., a distributor of
CDs, DVDs, VHS movies and video games. Under the agreement, Coral Springs,
Florida-based Alliance will receive 46.2 million newly issued shares of
Liquid Audio, or 67 percent of the new company's outstanding shares.
Alliance provides physical fulfillment for retail stores and e-commerce
sites including Barnes & Noble, Circuit City, Amazon.com and
TowerRecords.com. Redwood City, Calif.-based Liquid Audio has developed
proprietary digital rights management and delivery technology for digital
music. Alliance president and CEO Eric Weisman will be president and CEO
of the combined company, while Liquid Audio CEO Gerald Kearby will be CEO
of the new company's Liquid Audio division. "This merger will firmly
position the combined company to become a leading provider of commerce
solutions for entertainment media through physical and digital channels,"
said Weisman.

o Bush Makes Push for More Access to Broadband

Washington, DC -- President Bush on Thursday pledged to make high-speed
Internet access more widely available across the U.S. Bush told technology
executives at the 21st Century High-Tech Forum in Washington that it's a
goal of his administration to bring broadband to all parts of the nation.
"Hopefully, we're doing a pretty good job of working to eliminate hurdles
and barriers to get broadband implemented," said Bush. "People in
government need to think about ways to expand economic opportunity. And
one way to do so is to make sure that our country is still on the cutting
edge of productivity gains." Many technology executives have been lobbying
the White House for financial incentives to expand their services. Panels
set to discuss the issue will include such industry heavy hitters as AOL
Time Warner Chairman Steve Case and former Netscape CEO James Barksdale,
as well as several administration officials. The federal government plans
to spend $53 billion on information technology next year.

o Report: Global Set-top Box Sales to Reach 147.7 Million in 2008

London, England -- Annual worldwide sales of digital set-top boxes, used
to deliver digital TV signals and advanced features like video-on-demand
and interactive television, are expected to reach 147.7 million units in
2008, according to a recently released report from market research firm
Strategy Analytics. The year 2001 was marked by decreased European demand
for set-tops, due to the completion of or delays in upgrading consumers'
boxes by cable and satellite firms. Faster digital cable growth and
consumer demand for multiple set-top boxes in the home will spur increased
growth this year, the firm predicts, with shipments expected to rise by 34
percent in 2002, to 44.6 million units; revenues are expected to rise to
$10.8 billion. "The key factors for successful set-top box manufacturers
will be price and flexibility," said Strategy Analytics' Peter King.
"Operators are seeking to cut costs wherever possible and yet offer a
wider range of alternatives to customers. Manufacturers must position
themselves to meet those demands."

o Universal, Sony to Offer Cheaper Music Downloads, CD Burning, Portability

Los Angeles -- Challenged by the poor performance of their existing
digital music initiatives, major record labels Universal Music Group and
Sony Music are both planning to reduce the prices they charge for digital
music downloads, as well as add much sought-after features such as the
ability to burn songs onto CD and transfer them to portable players,
according to published reports. Reuters reports that this summer,
Universal will offer singles for $0.99 or less and albums for $9.99
through its relationship with Liquid Audio; these downloads will be
playable only through Liquid's proprietary player, but can be burned onto
CD and transferred to portable devices. CNET News.com reports that Sony
will reduce prices for downloads sold through its partner RioPort from
$1.99 to $1.49, and offer burning capabilities. "The main thing that's
changed is the peer-to-peer problem," Larry Kenswil, president of
Universal Music's eLabs, told Reuters. "This has forced us to reevaluate
what it takes to get people to buy music on the Internet. Basically, it
takes aggressive pricing and to offer as much of our catalog that can be
cleared."

graphics and other digital media applications, has announced that it will
acquire NxtWave Communications, a developer of integrated circuits that
allow high-speed transmission of video and data in digital TV, set-top box
and PC applications, for $20 million in cash. The addition of

integrated chipsets to set-top customers providing lower cost and greater

o Briefly Noted:

exclusive premiere of a Britney Spears remix song on AOL Music's First
Listen service was streamed more than 1.35 million times in one day by AOL
members and general Web users. The single "Boys(Co-Ed Remix)," featuring
Pharell from the hip-hop group N.E.R.D., appears on the "Austin Powers in
Goldmember" motion picture soundtrack.

(Atlanta) Concurrent Computer Corp., a provider of video-on-demand
delivery systems, announced on Thursday that it has partnered with
Australia-based interactive TV software developer PowerSource.
Atlanta-based Concurrent will integrate PowerSource's Cinematheque
middleware into its own MediaHawk video server technology for delivering
video-on-demand over Internet Protocol networks.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Thursday reported on the delayed rollout of
3G wireless services in Europe, which promise wireless streaming video at
speeds around 384kbps and advanced services like videophone calling.
French telecom equipment maker Alcatel, which will be the provider of 3G
equipment for wireless network operator Orange in Sweden, will not debut
3G there until 2003. "We have said repeatedly that rollout would not be in
2001 but 2003. There will be no services with users in 2002. We have not
changed our mind and we don't see it as delayed. It just takes time,"
Alcatel's Marc Rouanne told Wired News.

(San Francisco) Online magazine Salon.com on Thursday featured an
interview with University of Texas at Dallas economist Stan Leibowitz, on
the topic of file-sharing's effects on the sales of recorded music.
Specifically, Leibowitz is troubled to find reasons why file-sharing and
CD burning haven't yet been more overtly detrimental to the record
industry.
http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2002/06/13/liebowitz/index.html

(San Francisco) CNET News.com featured an article on Thursday on graphics
firm Nvidia's new programming language that could provide video game
developers with more control over a game's look, enabling them to add
degrees of detail much more easily. The "Cg" language, developed with
Microsoft and based on their line of "C" languages, makes it easier for
programmers to code for more detailed images of difficult items to portray
realistically in games, such as fur or grass.

(New York) Business Week Online recently reported on the potential effect
that tiered pricing for cable broadband subscribers, based on the amount
of bandwidth they consume, could have on file-sharing services such as
Kazaa and Morpheus, which depend on current unmetered broadband bandwidth
schemes. Cable companies including AT&T Broadband, Charter and Cox are
beginning to charge customers who use their connections to download and
upload many files each month higher fees, which could mean fewer
file-sharers sharing fewer files because of the extra they will be asked
to pay.
