o Music Industry Settles Copyright Claims Against Audiogalaxy

New York -- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and
National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) announced that they have
settled out-of-court their copyright infringement claims against
Audiogalaxy, a music file-sharing service. Under the terms of the
settlement, Austin, Texas-based Audiogalaxy will pay music publishers and
the recording industry "a substantial sum based on Audiogalaxy's assets
and interest in resolving this case quickly." Audiogalaxy can now offer
music files based on a "filter-in" system, where the songwriter, music
publisher, and/or recording company must first consent before a song
becomes available. "We are pleased to settle this case quickly," said RIAA
chairman and CEO Hilary Rosen. "This should serve as a wake-up call to the
other networks that facilitate unauthorized copying. The responsibility
for implementing systems that allow for the authorized use of copyrighted
works rests squarely on the shoulders of the peer-to-peer network."

o Survey: Game Developers' Salaries Solid Despite Slumping Economy

San Francisco -- A new survey of video game developers' salaries indicates
that the industry has remained healthy despite the downturn in the overall
U.S. economy. Game Developer magazine's July 2002 issue reports that the
average game programmer salary is $66,000. A game designer with one year
of experience earns an average of $52,000, with the highest salary
reported at $300,000, while a game producer earns an average of $76,000.
The survey also found that women in the game industry fare better than
women in other industries, earning 89 cents on the dollar, exceeding the
national average of 76 cents. "Games are becoming an ever greater force in
mainstream entertainment and culture, and with this trend comes increased
interest in career opportunities in game development," said Game Developer
editor-in-chief Jennifer Olsen. "And because game development combines
both entertainment and high-tech, the industry is well positioned to
thrive in a variety of economic conditions."

o Supreme Court: Satellite TV Must Carry All Local Stations, Or None At All

Washington -- The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that satellite TV providers
must follow the same "must-carry" rules as cable TV operators with regard
to providing local TV stations to their subscribers. The court denied the
argument of satellite companies, who said that they had a free speech
right to broadcast whatever they wish. The current Federal Communications
Commission rules state that satellite TV companies such as DirecTV or the
DISH Network must offer all local stations in a particular region if they
are going to offer any single station; the satellite firms still may
decide not to carry any local stations.

o Swedish Wireless Games Firm Netgame Factory Raises $1.6 Million

Stockholm -- Netgame Factory, a developer of online and wireless games,
announced that it has raised $1.6 million in its third round of venture
capital financing from Brainheart Capital. Stockholm-based Netgame Factory
is developing lotteries with cash prizes, contests, arena betting and
other wireless game content for wireless operators including Mobilkom
Austria and Sweden's Telia Mobile, which holds a 10 percent equity stake
in the company.

o Disney to Use Linux-Based HP Computers for Digitally Animated Films

Palo Alto, Calif. -- PC maker HP announced on Tuesday that it has formed a
partnership with Walt Disney Feature Animation to provide Linux-based
workstations and servers for use in the production of Disney's animated,
feature-length motion pictures. The move is another boost for the free,
open source Linux operating system, which competes with other, paid
operating systems like IBM's Unix and Microsoft's Windows for the
corporate and consumer PC market. "For us, it's a move to less-expensive
commodity technology systems," Walt Disney Feature Animation vice
president John Carey told The New York Times.

o Canada's Aliant Telecom to Spend $55 Million on Broadband Network

Saint John, New Brunswick -- Canadian Internet provider Aliant Telecom
said that it will spend $55 million to expand its Atlantic Canada
broadband network to include video-on-demand and other services offered
over DSL high-speed Internet lines. The company also announced that it
will drop its VibeVision digital TV service provider, instead going with
Bell Canada's Bell ExpressVu service. Both services will be built using
