o Subscription Service Provider FullAudio Gets $13.5M, Licenses BMG Songs

Chicago -- FullAudio, a provider of branded digital music subscription
services, announced on Wednesday that it has raised a total of $13.5
million in its third round of venture capital financing. Existing investor
New Enterprise Associates led the round; new investors William Harris
Investors Ventures Fund I, Rocket Ventures, Millennium Technology Ventures
and Odyssey Venture Partners, as well as previous investors Venture
Strategy Partners, Kettle Partners and IDEO Ventures also participated.
Chicago-based FullAudio provides digital music subscription services for
companies including radio giant Clear Channel's radio station websites.
Separately, the company announced on Wednesday that it has signed an
agreement with major label BMG Entertainment to license the company's
extensive catalog of songs for its services. FullAudio will use the new
funds to expand its business development, marketing and subscription

o Report: Music Applications Will Drive Home Networking Adoption

New York -- One-third of broadband users are interested in installing a
home network to listen to PC music files on a home stereo, according to a
report from New York-based research firm Jupiter Media Metrix. Although
the desire to share Internet access across multiple PCs in the home will
initially drive U.S. consumers to create home networks, Jupiter predicts
that music will emerge as the "surprise killer application" for home
networking. "Sharing broadband connections between multiple PCs will drive
early adoption of home networks, but music will take it mainstream," said
Jupiter senior analyst Joe Laszlo. "The music industry must get involved
now and work to shape consumer expectations and design devices that will
make music fans and content owners happy." Jupiter predicts that 29
percent, or 23 million U.S. online households will have a PC-based home
network by 2006 -- up from approximately six million in 2001.

o PlayMedia Systems Threatens to Stall Bertelsmann's Purchase of Napster

San Francisco -- A company that provided Napster with technology for the
secure file-sharing service it was working on has filed documents with the
court handling Napster's bankruptcy proceeding and acquisition by
Bertelsmann, which may disrupt the process, CNET News.com reported on
Wednesday. Los Angeles-based PlayMedia Systems provided its AMP media
player technology -- the basis for popular programs such as Nullsoft's
Winamp -- to Napster in July 2001, along with encryption, decryption, and
other security technology. The company says in its filing with a Delaware
court that its contract with Napster may not allow the technology to be
transferred to Bertelsmann, but the company said it is not looking to
throw a wrench into the proceedings. "We're just trying to protect
PlayMedia's licenses," PlayMedia attorney Richard Riley told CNET
News.com. "Depending on what [Napster's] position is on the PlayMedia
license, we may have to object to the transaction."

o Report: MPEG Video Chip Market to Triple In Revenue by 2006

Scottsdale, Ariz. -- Spurred by the proliferation of digital video, the
MPEG video chip merchant market will triple in revenue from 2001 to 2006,
from $1 billion to $3.3 billion, according to a report released on
Wednesday by market research firm In-Stat/MDR. The chips are used to
compress and decompress video files on PCs, DVD players, camcorders,
set-top boxes and other devices. In-Stat/MDR reports that during this
time, the overall composition of the market will change, as the HD MPEG-2
decoder, MPEG-4, and MPEG-2 encoder market share increases while all other
segments decline. In terms of providers, the firm says that in 2001,
STMicroelectronics took in the largest share of revenue, with $392 million
or 33 percent; ESS Technology came first in unit shipments with 34 million
or 31 percent share, and LSI Logic was second in both categories. These
three manufacturers accounted for over 70 percent of the MPEG video chip
market.

o Streaming Media Firm Burst.com Files Suit Against Microsoft

Santa Rosa, Calif. -- Burst.com, a provider of streaming media services,
has filed suit against Microsoft alleging the company has violated
anti-trust and trade secrets laws. Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Burst.com
provides technology that delivers full-motion video and CD-quality audio
over IP-based networks, and claims that Microsoft misappropriated its
technology and employed it in its upcoming "Corona" Windows Media
software. The company also says that Microsoft has engaged in
anticompetitive practices that compelled companies including Intel to
cease using its technology.
