o Report: Apple, Hollywood Studios in Talks on iTunes Movie Store

Los Angeles - Apple is in talks with the major Hollywood studios on licensing films for an Internet movie download store to complement its iTunes Music Store, Daily Variety reported, citing "numerous sources" at the studios. The studios reportedly rejected Apple's proposal to sell films for $9.99 each, and "insiders" told Variety Apple may eventually compromise, allowing pricing to range from $9.99 for older titles to $19.99 for new releases. "We can't be put in a position where we lose the ability to price our most popular content higher than less popular stuff," a studio exec close to the negotiations told Variety. Sources told Variety they expect the video store to launch by year's end at the latest, with many predicting the launch to coincide with the release of a new iPod model with a bigger screen more suitable for viewing films.

o Judge Halts Enforcement of Louisiana Video Game Law

Los Angeles - A federal judge has granted the video game industry's request to temporarily block enforcement of a Louisiana law enacted last week that prohibits the sale of violent games to minors, Reuters reported on Tuesday. U.S. District Court Judge James Brady approved the block, while a hearing on a preliminary injunction against the law will be heard in federal court on June 27. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and Entertainment Merchants Association sued to have the law overturned, arguing that it violates First Amendment free speech protections. State video game sales restrictions similar to Louisiana's have been routinely overturned through court challenges in California, Illinois, Michigan and Washington. Meanwhile, the ESA has voiced its support for a separate Louisiana video game bill, which prohibits the sale of games to minors that feature sexually explicit content falling under the standard legal definition of obscenity. That bill passed unanimously in the Louisiana House last week and is soon expected to be signed by Gov. Kathleen Blanco. The ESA supported a similarly-worded bill in Maryland.

o Chinese iPod Manufacturer Foxconn Denies "Sweatshop" Claims

Taipei, Taiwan - Chinese electronics manufacturer Foxconn, which was reported last week to be submitting workers making Apple's iPod Nano players to "sweatshop" conditions, has denied several of the claims in the U.K. Mail on Sunday article, DigitTimes.com reported. Foxconn spokesman Edmund Ding said the company does not operate a facility in the town of Suzhou, as the article states. It also employs a total of 160,000 workers worldwide, despite the article's claim that 200,000 work and live in dormitories at a plant near Shenzhen, toiling 15 hours days for $50 in monthly wages. Ding told DigiTimes.com the company pays workers at the Shenzhen plant the minimum wage of 810 yuan ($101) a month as stipulated by Chinese law. Ding added that Foxconn is reserving the right to take legal action over the Mail on Sunday report.

o ABC: Free TV Shows Streamed 11 Million Times in First Month

Los Angeles - Disney's ABC television network announced that a selection of its TV shows made available for free online streaming were viewed 11 million times during the first month of a test of the service, Reuters reported. Disney added that 87% of those who answered a survey after watching the programs remembered the accompanying ads, compared with an average 40% ad recall by TV viewers. Disney said the streaming viewership eclipsed the 6 million episodes of ABC shows that have been sold in the nine months they been available for download on Apple's iTunes Store, adding that it did not see TV viewership decline as a result of the free streaming site. ABC told Reuters it will conclude the test of the service on June 30, as scheduled, with plans to re-launch the service in the fall after incorporating data gathered during the test.

o Former Gracenote CEO Launches MOG Online Music Community

Berkeley, Calif. - The former CEO of CD identification technology firm Gracenote on Tuesday announced the launch of MOG, an online music destination that allows users to compare their musical tastes with an online community. Headed by David Hyman, who in addition to heading Gracenote was also previously senior vice president of marketing at MTV Interactive, MOG has to date raised $1.4 million in financing. The site can automatically scan a user's hard drive and create a listing of what albums and songs are owned, while widgets allow users to display what song they are currently listening to, and create lists for recently played and top songs of the week or month. MOG also provides 30-second sound samples of every song, as well as direct links to iTunes and Amazon for download and CD purchases. MOG also offers other blog functions, like the ability to embed audio samples and video clips with text posts, and customizable skins designed by pop artists like Frank Kozik, Kinsey and Coop. MOG content can also be easily added to MySpace pages or personal blogs. "Thanks to bleeding-edge technology and ridiculously easy tools, MOG takes the work out of showing the world what you're about musically and connecting you with others with similar musical tastes," said MOG CEO David Hyman

o Software, Device Makers Adopt eBook Technology Standards

New York - The International Digital Publishing Forum (IPDF) announced on Tuesday that major software developers and device manufacturers have agreed to support its new e-book standards, which aim to resolve file interoperability and production issues hampering growth of the industry. The new standards include a ZIP-based format that will allow publishers to release a single standard file to their sales and distribution channels, instead of the current multiple proprietary files needed. An update to the XML-based Open eBook Publication Structure Standard (OEBPS) is also under development, which will focus on detailed control of content rendering, navigation and accessibility. The IDPF said its forthcoming specifications have already received support from Adobe, eBook Technologies, Amazon.com's Mobipocket, Motricity, iRex Technologies and OSoft.com. "The enhancements to the standards will improve accessibility and be more publisher and consumer friendly," said Mark Carey, CEO of open source document company OSoft.com. "Of particular interest to publishers is the standardization of a master e-book format which will greatly improve document workflow and reduce e-book publishing costs."

San Francisco
- Wired News on Tuesday reported on the founding of a new political movement in the U.S. -- born in the aftermath of a raid on a Swedish file-sharing website -- that seeks to inform U.S. citizens about intellectual property laws. The Pirate Party of the United States mirrors the Piratpartiet political party in Sweden, which was created after the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) persuaded Swedish authorities to go after The Pirate Bay, a BitTorrent tracker site popular in the country. One of the party's organizers, 30-year-old David Allison, told Wired News the party will "nominate candidates for public office that would get people thinking about intellectual property and privacy, and confront other candidates head-on about these issues."
