o Microsoft, Mexican Telco Acquiring Spanish-language Portal Yupi Internet

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft announced that its joint venture with Mexican
telecommunications firm Telmex, called T1msn, will acquire
Spanish-language portal Yupi Internet. Terms of the transaction were not
disclosed. Microsoft will combine Yupi with T1msn, operating as T1msn in
Mexico and as Yupi/MSN in other North and South American markets. Both
services will offer MSN services such as Hotmail and instant messaging, as
well as Yupi's Spanish-language news sites and other content. The online
Hispanic audience is expected to rise from 22 million in 2000 to 77
million in 2005, according to analyst firm Jupiter Media Metrix.

o German Court Orders H-P to Pay Fees on CD Burners

Berlin -- A German court has ruled that computer products manufacturer
Hewlett-Packard must pay fees retroactive for three years on all
recordable CD drives sold in the country to account for pirated
intellectual property, IDG reported on Friday. H-P said it will appeal the
ruling. The court has yet to determine what fee will be paid on every CD
burner the company sold since February 1998. H-P withdrew an earlier offer
to pay $5.25 to authors'-rights guilds on each new device sold.

o Streaming Provider iBeam Near Securing Funding From "Major Telco"

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- iBeam, a provider of streaming media services to
businesses, announced on Friday that it is "nearing completion of a
definitive agreement" to receive much-needed funding from a "major
provider of telecommunications services." "We anticipate having a signed
agreement in the near future," said iBeam CEO Peter Desnoes.
The company at the same time said it would not meet its projected revenue
for the second quarter of 2001. Sunnyvale-based iBeam laid off 25 percent
of its staff in April, and currently faces delisting from the Nasdaq.

o Study: Nearly One-Third of U.S. Has Access to Broadband

Long Beach, Calif. -- Nearly one-third of U.S. residents have access to
broadband Internet connections at work, school or home, according to a
recent study published by research firms Arbitron and Coleman. Of this
demographic, about two-thirds have broadband at work, while one-third have
high-speed Internet access in their homes. Only 15 percent of the
demographic have broadband at both locations. "With broadband, most of the
attention has been focused on the growth of the residential market, but
the large number of Internet users who have broadband at work represents a
larger potential market for streaming audio and video providers," said
Coleman vice president Warren Kurtzman. The study was conducted though
phone interviews with 800 broadband-connected participants in May 2001.

o Midway Games Discontinues Arcade Games in Favor of Consoles

Chicago -- Game developer Midway Games announced on Friday that due to a
sluggish market for coin-operated games, it will discontinue manufacturing
arcade games and instead focus exclusively on developing games for video
game consoles. Chicago-based Midway said that no more than 60 employees
will be laid off as a result of the business unit closure, and an
accompanying charge of $8 million for severance packages and other
expenses in the current quarter will be assessed. Midway will now develop
games for Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube and
Game Boy Advance.

o Companies Form Joint Venture for Corporate Webcasting

Los Angeles -- Vertical Computer Systems (VCS), a software developer and
provider of multi-language portals for several geographical regions, and
webcast services provider Strategic Media Alliance announced on Friday
that they have formed WorldBridge Webcasting Services, a joint venture
that will produce and distribute corporate webcasts. Los Angeles-based VCS
will receive a 51 percent interest in the company in exchange for
providing an undisclosed capital investment. The company will market
WorldBridge's webcasting services on its portals serving the U.S., Brazil,
China and India. Los Angeles-based Strategic Media Alliance has produced
corporate audio and video webcasts for IBM, AT&T and Intel, and is
currently producing a series of webcasts for Forbes.com. WorldBridge hopes
to capitalize on the recent SEC "Fair Disclosure" regulation, which makes
public companies disclose potentially market-moving information to all
interested parties, instead of the usual exclusive audience of analysts.

o Briefly Noted:

(San Francisco) CNET reported on Friday on the ongoing disputes over the
Hague Convention on Jurisdiction and Foreign Judgments, an international
agreement that could compel its 52 member countries to enforce one
another's laws regarding issues like free speech and copyright laws on the
Internet. The American Library Association criticized the Convention in a
letter, saying, "We are concerned that the draft convention... could
subject Internet users in the United States to intellectual property
infringement in other countries for activities that are lawful in the
U.S." Jamie Love, of Ralph Nader's Consumer Project on Technology, said,
"it will strangle the Internet with a suffocating blanket of overlapping
jurisdictional claims, expose every Web page publisher to liabilities for
libel, defamation and other speech offenses from virtually any country."

(Long Beach, Calif.) Negotiations with movie studios for use of their
content is proving to be one of the deciding factors for launching
services that would distribute movies over broadband connections though
video-on-demand, Reuters reported from the Streaming Media West conference
Thursday in Long Beach, Calif. "The negotiations are proving far more
difficult than technological issues," Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment
president Yair Landau told Reuters. Sony and Disney are reportedly the
furthest along in developing video-on-demand services.

(Tokyo) Japanese wireless operator NTT DoCoMo said that it will begin
distributing its new 3G video cell phones today, after a software glitch
delayed a planned consumer trial, Newsbytes reported on Friday. The trial
will be conducted with about 1200 participants; NTT said it received
147,000 inquiries when it announced the video phone trial.

(Long Beach, Calif.) Wired News on Friday reported on the Internet
Streaming Media Alliance, a group of technology companies including Apple,
Sun, IBM and Cisco that is challenging efforts by RealNetworks and
Microsoft to develop a standard for streaming media. The ISMA believes
that its two enormous rivals do not have the best interests of streaming
media providers in mind. Seattle-based RealNetworks recently announced
that it would work to develop a standard for streaming, so that working
business models could be more easily created, and Microsoft is trying to
gain acceptance for its own standard. A Real or Microsoft streaming
standard would likely help to make that company's streaming media software
the standard.

(London) U.K.-based wireless games developer iFone has partnered with
French game company Infogrames to develop Java-based versions of popular
Atari games for cell phones, ZDNet reported on Friday. However, games like
Pong and Centipede -- which will cost about $0.35 each to download -- can
only be played on phones that run Java 2 MicroEdition, and consume so much
memory that they must be deleted after each game.

(New York) The New York Times recently featured an article on how the U.S.
military is working with Hollywood and computer graphics companies to
develop more realistic computer-generated combat simulations. The article
describes a program written by the University of Southern California's
Institute for Creative Technologies, the Information Sciences Institute
and the Integrated Media Systems Center that features advanced animation,
voice synthesis and voice recognition technology.
