o French Law Will Stop Short of Compelling Apple to Open iTunes

Paris - French lawmakers are set to approve a law that would stop short of forcing Apple and other companies to open their digital music stores to competitors' playback devices, the Associated Press reported. Under a draft version, Apple, Sony and others would have had to share details of their proprietary security technologies, or else likely shutter their online stores in France. The version set for approval lets companies like Apple avoid this stipulation as long as they obtain permission to do so from both artists and their record labels. "It's perfectly legitimate that the artist should decide the potential limitations on the use of his work," French lawmaker Christian Vanneste told AP. The concession from France comes as consumer groups from its European neighbors Norway, Sweden and Denmark have charged Apple and its closed iTunes and iPod system with violation of national contract and copyright laws.

o Coca-Cola to Shutter U.K. Online Music Store

London - Coca-Cola plans to close its online music store in the U.K. next month, a victim of competition from Apple's iTunes Store and others, TheRegister reported. MyCokeMusic.com was launched in early 2004, using technology from Loudeye's OD2 services. "In 2004, the digital music scene was just developing and the only way for Coke to offer access to music downloads was to open our own store. That's not true today and there is no need for Coke to continue to run a store," reads a note on the site. Coca-Cola is encouraging consumers to use up credits on the site before July 31; they may also ask to have them transferred to another OD2-powered music store. OD2 also operates U.K. music stores for CD Wow, MSN, MTV, NTL, Tiscali and Wanadoo.

Neither Google Video nor YouTube has specific regulations against posting fight videos, but Google said it will flag videos where those featured are "hurt or killed," while YouTube allows its users to police its library of videos.
