o XM Chief: "Paranoia" Driving
Industry Objections to New Technology
McLean, Va. - Hugh Panero, the president and CEO of XM
Satellite Radio, told a crowd at Friday's Digital Media Conference,
hosted by Digital Media Wire in McLean, Va., that his company's
current battle with the recording industry over new radio features
that allow subscribers to digitally store and replay content are
unfounded. "As long as there are entrepreneurs trying to find new
ways to make consumers happy, there have been people… who try to
stifle change," said Panero, a veteran of the cable industry. "This
is just a normal cycle that occurs following an attack of paranoia."
Panero said that his company, which now boasts more than 6.5 million
subscribers, has given a healthy boost to the industry, particularly
artists who wouldn't otherwise have a forum for their work. Panero
said that XM is currently negotiating with the major record labels
to resolve industry concerns. "While I can't comment on the
specifics, we've put very meaningful deals on the table. Our goal is
to find a business solution to what's become a business issue."

o CNET: File-Sharing
Site Names Alleged Hacker Hired by MPAA
San Francisco - The operators of a search engine that
provides links to copyrighted media on the BitTorrent file-sharing
network has provided more details on its allegations the Motion
Picture Association of America (MPAA) hired a hacker to retrieve
information on the company, CNET News.com reported. Valence Media,
the parent company of Torrentspy.com, said in documents filed
Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles that MPAA representatives
-- including director of legal affairs Dean Garfield --arranged to
pay Canadian Robert Anderson $15,000 to obtain information on the
company. Anderson says he hacked into Torrentspy's e-mail system and
retrieved items including a spreadsheet of company earnings and
expenses, information on file architecture and proprietary search
functions, and a utility bill from one Torrentspy executive. In the
court documents, Anderson says he contacted the MPAA with the
hacking offer after a bad experience working with Torrentspy founder
Justin Bunnell, but later had a change of heart and offered to
provide the company details of what he had done. In addition to
acquisitioning his hacking skills, Anderson said the MPAA hired
private investigators to comb the trash of Torrentspy executives.
News.com reported that the MPAA issued a "broad denial" to
Torrentsy's charges.

o Google
Testing New "Cost-Per-Action" Online Advertising Model
San Francisco -- Google is testing a new online
advertising service that would only make advertisers pay when users
performed a specific action, such as making a purchase or creating a
sales lead, Wired News reported. The "cost-per-action" network would
complement Google's existing AdSense network, where advertisers pay
each time a user clicks on their ads. This system has sometimes been
criticized for susceptibility to "click fraud," where someone
repeatedly clicks on an ad in an attempt to skew the results. "We're
always looking for new ways to provide effective and useful features
to advertisers, publishers and users," a Google spokesperson told
Wired News. "As part of these efforts we are currently testing a
cost-per-action pricing model to give advertisers more flexibility
and provide publishers another way to earn revenue through AdSense."

o Boeing
Exploring Options for Unprofitable In-Flight Broadband Service
New York - Boeing is looking to unload or possibly shutter
its unprofitable Connexion in-flight broadband Internet service, The
Wall Street Journal reported. Sources told The Journal that the
company has sunk about $1 billion in the service, which has failed
to turn a profit in six years. Boeing has reportedly approached
several commercial satellite operators and other suitors about
acquiring or taking a large stake in Connextion. "The company is
evaluating Connexion to assess what's best for both the business and
our customers," Boeing spokesman John Dern told The Journal. "We
know we have a useful product, but we're trying to determine how
good a business we have."

World Cup Internet Traffic Picks Up in Second Week
Reston, Va. - The official site of the FIFA World Cup
soccer tournament continues to draw impressive numbers, according to
a new report from comScore Networks. The firm said that traffic to
the site, hosted by Yahoo, peaked on Monday, June 12, with more than
226 million page views and more than 5 million unique visitors. That
compares to only 90 million total page views over the two days of
last July's Live 8 concert. In the U.S., Internet users showed
increased interest in the tournament during the second week, with
111 million pages served to the U.S. audience on Monday.

o Gemstar
Acquires TV Fan Site JumptheShark.com
Los Angeles - Gemstar-TV Guide International, the
publisher of TV Guide magazine and a provider of electronic program
guides for digital TV services, announced on Friday that it has
acquired Jump the Shark, a website where TV fans argue about whether
shows have reached their peak. Financial terms of the deal were not
disclosed. The term "jump the shark" refers to an episode of "Happy
Days" where Fonzie jumped over a shark on water skis -- an event
that has come to represent the point at which writers have run out
of ideas and a TV show has passed its prime. Jump the Shark founder
Jon Hein also occasionally serves as a guest host of "The Howard
Stern Show." Los Angeles-based Gemstar said it will integrate
content from the site into TV Guide magazine, its website and
electronic program guides.
