o Hundreds of UK, European Indie Labels License Tracks to Napster

Redwood City, Calif. -- Napster announced on Tuesday that hundreds of
thousands of songs from artists on U.K.-based and other European
independent record labels have been licensed for trading on its
file-sharing service. Financial terms of the agreements were not
disclosed. The London-based Association of Independent Music (AIM) and the
Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA), which together consist
of hundreds of independent record labels, have agreed to license songs to
Napster, "help[ing] ensure the future of Napster's file sharing community
when its membership-based service launches this summer," Napster said in a
statement. The deal does not include third party publishing rights, which
Napster said it will negotiate separately. Some of the artists' whose
music will soon be available on Napster include Moby, Tom Jones, Muse,
Paul Oakenfold, Mogwai, Tricky and Belle and Sebastian. "Independent
artists and labels have always been the trendsetters in music and the
music business," said Napster founder Shawn Fanning. "I'm grateful that
they are now showing that leadership when it comes to using technology to
make music more accessible."

o New York Times, Other Publishers Deleting Archives After Ruling

New York -- The New York Times said it will remove 115,000 articles from
its archives as a result of yesterday's Supreme Court ruling that said
that it and other publishers must have permission from freelance writers
to offer the works in their archives. The deleted articles account for
about eight percent of the total amount published by the paper between
1980 and 1995, when freelance contracts were updated to include digital
rights, CNET reported. Time, Inc. said it will remove somewhere under ten
percent of the articles in its public database. "We are extremely
disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision," said New York Times
publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. "The Times has lost this case and will
now undertake the difficult and sad process of removing significant
portions from its electronic historical archive."

Sausalito, Calif. -- AudioBase, a developer of streaming audio technology,
has laid off 50 percent of its staff, VentureWire reported on Tuesday.
Although the company would not comment on how many employees were laid
off, its website states the current amount of employees to be 45. The
layoffs affected Sausalito-based AudioBase's hosting and streaming network

million from individual investors that included Charles Schwab. AudioBase

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Yahoo announced on Tuesday that users of its
instant messaging service now have the ability to send each other video.
Users with webcams can send live video stills while chatting on the system
at a rate of about one still per second, for users with fast connections.
The service also lets users know when a friend on their contact list has a
webcam and when they are transmitting images, as well as allowing them to
choose which users can view their own images. Fremont, Calif.-based
Logitech will include Yahoo's messaging software with all future webcams
that it ships worldwide.

New York -- Cable TV movie network Sundance Channel and Vivendi
Universal-backed film website Hypnotic announced on Tuesday that they will

culled from Hypnotic's library of shorts and edited together by Sundance's

filmmakers and animation. In addition to airing on Sundance Channel, the
films will be sold to other outlets such as international cable networks,
airlines, broadband providers, and hotels. Sundance Channel also announced
