o Sirius CEO Says He Would "Love to Buy" XM; Shares Jump 6%

Dulles, Va. - Shares of XM Satellite Radio jumped more than 6% on Monday after the head of rival Sirius Satellite Radio told attendees at a conference in New York that he would like to buy XM, Reuters reported. "We'd love to buy them," said Mel Karmazin, the CEO of Sirius, as quoted by Reuters. "Price would matter, so that would be an issue ... (and) there would definitely be the regulatory issue." In response, an XM spokesman told Reuters, "We do not comment on our competitors' wishful thinking." XM currently has more than 6.5 million subscribers, about 2.5 million more than its New York-based competitor. The company, however, is also facing federal probes, as well as friction with the recording industry over new radio technologies and shareholder lawsuits.

o Tower Records to Launch New Music Download Store Tuesday

Los Angeles - Music retail store chain Tower Records plans to launch a new digital music store on Tuesday that will be powered by Puretracks, which operates a popular service in Canada, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The service will initially offer a library of 1.2 million tracks, available for 99 cents each or $9.99 for full albums. Tower also plans to offer special bundles that combine CD and download purchases. Songs will be available in Microsoft's Windows Media format, in a higher bitrate (192 kbps) than is available from some other stores; however, the songs will not be compatible with Apple's iPod. "There's a gigantic gap in the market," Tower's Jason Munyon told THR. "Everyone's going for the big hit titles and the best-known names and not focusing on the true music fan consumers. We have a broad and deep catalog in all genres -- we're known for this, and we're experts at it."

o U.K. Radio Firm UBC to Launch Mobile Digital Radio Song Downloads

London - U.K. independent radio programming producer UBC Media announced on Monday plans to launch a digital radio station that lets listeners instantly download songs they hear to their mobile phones, Reuters reported. Testing will begin next month in Birmingham with Chrysalis Group's Heart station, while a full roll-out is planned for December -- when a greater number of digital radio-enabled mobile phones from makers like LG and Samsung hit the market. Users would be able to pre-pay for music on the service, which will charge a premium of 60% (1.25 pounds/$2.28) over what songs cost on iTunes. "We believe there is a premium of some kind in the mobile environment," UBC CEO Simon Cole told Reuters. The company has already signed licensing agreements with all four major record labels. UBC expects the service to generate $170 million in revenue over the next six years.

o Report: Women Account for 65% of Mobile Game Revenues

San Francisco - Sixty-five percent of mobile game revenue is generated by women, who favor puzzle and strategy games above other options, according to a report from market research firm Telephia. The firm said 8.6 million mobile games were purchased during the month of April, an increase of 60% from the beginning of the year. Mobile puzzle games from Electronic Arts' EA Mobile unit, such as "Tetris," "Bejeweled" and "JAMDAT Mahjong," are currently the top revenue-generating mobile games overall, with "Tetris" claiming 5.2% of total revenue. Women represented 72% of revenue generated in the puzzle/strategy game category, and led over men in all other categories (card/casino, sports/racing, trivia/word and classic/arcade) except action/adventure, where men generated 60% of revenue. "The casual nature of mobile games provides tremendous appeal to women, who are not traditionally hardcore gamers by console or online gaming standards," said Kanishka Agarwal, vice president of new products at Telephia. "The wireless industry has presented a hungry target audience willing to pay premium access to games through their cell phones."
