o Consumer Electronics Assoc. Releases 2001 Sales Figures, 2002 Projections

Arlington, Va. -- The Consumer Electronics Association, an industry trade
group, has released its "Digital America 2002," a report on sales volume
and trends for the past year in the consumer electronics industry. The
report indicates that despite numerous difficult factors in 2001, the
consumer electronics industry brought in $93.2 billion -- just 2 percent
below 2000's record-breaking figures. Factory sales for 2002 are predicted
to climb 3 percent to $95.7 billion. The report also includes estimated
2001 sales figures and projections for 2002 on devices including DVD
players, digital TVs, personal video recorders and cell phones.

o Jupiter Media Metrix to Formally Dissolve Company; CFO Resigns

New York -- Jupiter Media Metrix announced late Wednesday that following
the completion of the sale of its research and events business assets to
INT Media Group, it will liquidate all other assets and formally dissolve
the company. Jupiter also said that its chief financial officer, Jean
Robinson, will resign as part of a management transition plan. The
struggling company has provided Internet audience measurement services and
research on Internet economy companies, in addition to organizing
conferences and other events. Over the past several months, New York-based
Jupiter has sold off its audience measurement service, European contracts,
AdRelevance unit, and most recently, its research and events businesses.
"In February, we announced our plan to explore options that would improve
our financial position and ensure that Jupiter Media Metrix' valuable
brands and products remained in the marketplace," said Jupiter CEO Robert
Becker. "We are pleased with the progress we have made in that regard and
now believe that the dissolution of the company is in the best interest of
our stockholders."

o Loudeye Acquires Streaming Services Firm Digital Media Broadcast

Seattle -- Loudeye Technologies, a provider of webcasting and streaming
media services, announced on Thursday that it has acquired the assets of
Los Angeles-based Digital Media Broadcast (DMB), a digital media services
company formerly known as EncodeThis. Financial terms of the transaction
were not disclosed. The two companies had been working together on a
referral and reseller basis prior to this transaction, and the acquisition
will add DMB's customer relationships and a link to the broadcasters, film
studios and music companies in Los Angeles. Former DMB CEO Steven Samuels
will be retained to serve as general manager of Seattle-based Loudeye's
Los Angeles operations; certain other DMB employees will also be hired by
Loudeye. The combined operations will provide media and entertainment
companies with an end-to-end service offering, including digital media
capture, encoding, management, hosting, delivery, streaming and
application services. Earlier this week, Loudeye announced that it would
lay off 37 percent of its staff as part of a cost saving initiative.

> Highlights From Last Night's "Digital Music" Panel | New York City

Digital Media Wire's 2nd Annual "Digital Music" panel discussion series
capped a three-city tour on Wednesday evening in New York City. Here is
what our panelists had to say on the topic of, "What's Next?" for the
industry:

o Ted Cohen (EMI): Copy protection and new forms of encryption will not
ultimately prevent those who want to download music for free, from doing
so. All we're really trying to do is have people behave responsibly.

o Jon Vlassopulos (Digital World Services): Artists will broaden control
over their own rights, especially over digital music rights, as
subscription services become widely accepted in the marketplace.

o Jeff Liebenson (KMZ Rosenman): Enforcement actions against P2P services
will continue as the industry tries to control something they will never
be able to control completely. Content owners will vigorously explore new
consumer value propositions.

o Richard Conlon (BMI): Advanced wireless platforms are emerging and
inevitably the advertising market will rebound, laying the ground for
completely new types of services and new ways for consumers to consume
entertainment.

o Marc Schiller (Electric Artists): Innovation and creation in the
distribution of music will provide the most vibrant changes. Technical
developments will yield powerful new tools that will be used to create new
forms of collaboration. We have not yet seen the tip of the iceberg of
what people can do in collaboration online and it will happen so quickly
that the record companies will never be able to catch up.

o John Parry Barlow (Electronic Freedom Foundation): When I look at the
future, I see two futures. One is where the young actually win. The other
is where the old are successful in establishing an imaginary line around
human creativity by excessive enforcement of law and containing technology
with standards that are oblique, opaque, brittle and incapable of
changing. Who will live longer, the young or the old?

30 Reasons to Attend Jupiter Plug.IN -- July 8-9 - NYC

Reason #24: Your 12-year-old niece has 427 MP3s, but only 12 CDs.
The generation of passionate music consumers will soon be the next
generation of music purchasers. Their currency today is time and patience,
so they put up with the unreliability and clumsiness of file sharing
services. How will subscription services need to evolve to meet their
needs when their time becomes scarce, but their wallets fat?

o Briefly Noted:

(San Francisco) CNET News.com recently reported on a project in
development at AOL Time Warner code-named "Ultravox," which would
dramatically cut costs associated with moving large files, like audio and
video, across the Internet. Although no one from AOL Time Warner commented
on the record for the article, one source told News.com that "Ultravox is
a combo of (file) formats and switching hardware that supports them. It
allows for 10,000 users to be supported out of a cheap switch, versus
1,000 users on an expensive Sun (Microsystems) box or 100 users on a
(Microsoft Windows) NT box."

(Los Angeles) Performing rights organization BMI announced on Thursday
that it has signed a licensing agreement with Colorado-based Cellus USA, a
division of Oslo-based short message service (SMS) content provider
Cellus. Under the terms, Cellus USA may distribute compositions by BMI
artists as downloadable ringtones through wireless network operators to
their subscribers.

(San Diego) E.Digital, a manufacturer of portable digital audio devices,
announced on Thursday the creation of a Broadband Entertainment Business
Unit, headed by former MP3.com executive Bryan Jones, which will operate
the company's planned digital music subscription service. The service,
which will initially be available for free to E.Digital device owners and
then become subscription-based, will offer tracks from a growing
collection of 3,000 independent artists. The company also expects
eventually to offer other media like books and movies through the service.

(San Francisco) Greencine, an online DVD rental service, announced on
Thursday that it will launch its services in the San Francisco Bay Area on
July 15. The company hopes that its focus on independent and foreign film
selection rather than newly released major studio films will differentiate
it from major rival Netflix, which claims 500,000 subscribers. Greencine
will offer subscribers options starting from having 3 of its catalogue of
10,000 titles out at once for $21.95, up to having 8 DVDs out at once for
$41.95 per month.

(Indianapolis) Consumer electronics firm Thomson said on Thursday that it
has signed a two-year exclusive agreement with Microsoft to release a line
of RCA televisions that are optimized to present a high-quality graphics
experience for owners of Microsoft's Xbox video game console. The
televisions will feature a "VPORT," a one-plug connection to the Xbox on
the front of the set that Thomson says will improve picture quality for
gaming. "In game playing, the focus is on the picture -- with the players
requiring a life-like image. Our new line of RCA TVs with VPORT is ideal
for viewing the rich graphic details of Xbox games," said Vic Theobalds,
worldwide value TV product planning manager for Thomson.

http://www.thomson-multimedia.com

(New York) The New York Times recently reported on a new technology from
electronics firm Yamaha that lets users burn images and text directly onto
recordable CDs during the "burning" process, eliminating the need for
permanent markers or stamp-on stickers. The technology, called DiscT@2,
uses some of the data area onto which music is recorded to "burn" the
images; the amount of space available for printing depends on the amount
of available data space on each particular CD-R after music is burned.

(San Francisco) CNET News.com on Thursday reported on the growing number
of companies that have prohibited their employees from using file-sharing
services and accessing streaming media entertainment at work. The costly
bandwidth that such applications drain, combined with legal liability
issues from copyright owners -- as evidenced by a recent $1 million
settlement between the RIAA and an Arizona company for workplace copyright
infringement -- are compelling more companies to choose to limit their
employees' Internet access.

(San Francisco) Wired News on Thursday published a feature article on the
field of video game foley artistry, where sound engineers work in a studio
to create and record the sounds heard in video games using everyday
objects. The article in particular explores the work done by foley artists
at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound for LucasArts' upcoming title, "Bounty
Hunter," which features the Star Wars character Jango Fett.
