o Vivendi Universal CEO Messier Resigns Amid Poor Stock Performance

Paris -- Vivendi Universal CEO Jean-Marie Messier tendered his resignation
on Monday, amidst growing anger from shareholders over the company's poor
performance since the merger of Vivendi and Seagram, which owns Universal
Pictures and Universal Music Group. Shares of Vivendi Universal have lost
70 percent of their value so far this year. A proposal to split the
company is reportedly circulating among shareholders. CNET News.com
reported on Messier's championing of Internet-related initiatives,
including the company's $372 million acquisition of MP3.com, and how the
lack of substantial revenue from the site and other parts of Vivendi
Universal Net USA, the company's Internet arm, may not bode well with a
new head of the company.

o Liquid Audio Sues Geo-targeting Firm InfoSplit for Patent Infringement

Redwood City, Calif. -- Liquid Audio, a developer of digital music
distribution technology, announced on Tuesday that it has sued InfoSplit,
a developer of geographic targeting technology, for patent infringement of
its territory restriction technology. New York-based InfoSplit's software
can locate Web users' geographic location as they log onto the Internet.
Redwood City, Calif.-based Liquid Audio alleges in its suit that InfoSplit
has not licensed Liquid Audio technology that provides a "territorial
determination of remote computer location in a wide area network for
conditional delivery of digitized products." "We've invested significant
time and resources to develop and implement our secure distribution
technology. We intend to enforce our patents and protect our technology to
the full extent of the law," said Liquid Audio CEO Gerry Kearby. The suit
seeks an injunction against further infringement and unspecified damages
from InfoSplit.

o SongPro Device Turns Nintendo Game Boy Into Digital Music Player

Los Angeles -- SongPro, a developer of digital multimedia devices,
announced on Tuesday plans to release a digital music player plug-in
device for Nintendo's Game Boy handheld game console. The $99 device plays
both MP3s and audio files in Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format,
as well as a new SongPro Audio (SPA) format that allows graphics, text and
advertising to be displayed on the Game Boy's screen while listening to
music. Los Angeles-based SongPro will use digital music distributor
RioPort's PulseOne Media Service and Direct-to-Device technologies, which
will enable songs licensed from major record labels by San Jose-based
RioPort to be downloaded directly to the SongPro device. The device will
be launched at retail in the fall for the owners of the 125 million Game
Boy devices on the market; the company will also license its software for
creating multimedia files to online sites wanting to create SPA tracks for
its device. SongPro also announced that it has named Jon Richmond, former
president of News Corp.'s News Digital Media division, as its CEO.

o Digimarc Acquires Telstra Watermark Technology, Gets 4 New Patents

Tualatin, Ore. -- Digimarc, a developer of digital watermarking technology
for audio and video, announced that it has acquired video watermarking
technology and patent filings from Australian telecommunications firm
Telstra, and also was granted four of its own new patents by the U.S.
Patent Office. Financial terms of the transaction with Telstra were not
disclosed. The new patents issued to Oregon-based Digimarc cover
techniques that enable a digital watermark embedded into movies or imagery
to survive manipulations encountered during content distribution and
compression, as well as other proprietary technologies. "These new
inventions offer critical capabilities for record labels, movie studios
and other content owners who want to manage and protect their valuable
content from piracy," said Reed Stager, vice president and general
manager, Digimarc Global Licensing.

30 Reasons to Attend Jupiter Plug.IN -- July 8-9 - NYC

Reason #21: Over 15 million US households will have broadband access this
year.
And according to the same Jupiter research, another 5 million households
will enjoy high-speed home connections by 2003. Downloading large files
suddenly becomes as easy as opening an email. Does this enhance the appeal
of subscription services through eliminating a major friction -- or
undermine it by enabling easier file sharing?
