o America
Online Launches Video Search Tool
Dulles, Va. -- Looking for an early leg up on some of its portal
rivals, America Online said that it has launched a new video search
tool that will allow users to search through a vast repository of
content in categories from entertainment to news. AOL said that its
database draws from its video on-demand archive of more than 15,000
licensed and originally produced video assets from such partners as
HBO, Warner Bros. Online, New York Times Digital and About.com.
Other video will come from broadcast television, the Internet --
through the company's Singingfish video and audio search engine --
and RSS feeds from video streaming sites. In conjunction with the
move, AOL said that it is releasing an enhanced version of its video
player, which will integrate search and programming functions. As
part of its video focus, the company also said that it new AOL.com
web portal, now in beta testing, will soon launch a video hub that
will serve as a central location for music, news, sports and
entertainment video programming. Several of AOL's rivals, including

o Report:
Mobile Content Downloads to Triple in 2006 to $9.1 Billion
London -- Consumer demand for downloadable cell phone content is
expected to triple over the next year, creating a $9.1 billion
global market for mobile content, according to a report from
U.K.-based market research firm LogicaCMG. About 20% of the world's
1.5 billion mobile users have already downloaded content to their
phones, a figure expected to rise to 60% over the next year.
Ringtones, games and music are currently the most popular downloads,
with subscribers spending an average of $7.54 per month on mobile
content. Ten per cent of mobile users also expect to be able to
download video to their phones within the next year; 10% of Asia
Pacific respondents further expect full-length movie downloads.
Several concerns expressed by consumers include ease of payment, the
ability to share content with friends, and security issues such as
misuse of personal data. "Mobile phone users are starting to
experiment with their phones' capabilities but, drawing a parallel
with the popular SMS experience, it is clear that the service needs
to be simple, safe and intuitive from initial browsing through to
payment and download," said LogicaCMG COO Paul Gleeson.

o Shares of
CNET Soar on Rumors of Possible Sale
San Francisco -- Shares of San Francisco-based CNET Networks
closed up more than 10% last Thursday following reports that the
technology-focused media company is shopping for a buyer. The New
York Post reported that CNET has "had discussions" with Viacom and
Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp, among others, and that investment
banks are vying for the deal. AOL and Sunnyvale-based Yahoo are also
rumored to be considering making a bid. "What makes CNET attractive
is its huge amount of traffic," one source familiar with the matter
told the Post. "These media companies think they can turn it into
the next Google or Ask Jeeves." According to the sources, no deal is
imminent.

o DirecTV Suing
Comcast, Time Warner and Cox Group
Atlanta -- In a complaint filed on Thursday against In Demand, a
cable TV video-on-demand and pay-per-view group owned by Comcast,
Time Warner and Cox Communications, DirecTV Group alleges that the

hurt DirecTV's business. The complaint alleges that In Demand's
high-definition digital channels INHD and INHD2 have a pricing
policy that favors cable services over satellite channels. DirecTV
also claims that In Demand's pricing violates a Federal
Communications Commission rule that prohibits cable companies that
own content from denying access to satellite competitors, according
to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

o Study:
Consumers Increasingly Buying Electronics Online
Arlington, Va. -- Online shopping for consumer electronics
products is gaining in popularity, according to a new study by the
Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). While an average of 5% of
all consumer electronics purchases are made online, certain product
categories -- including personal computing, digital cameras,
wireless home networking devices and portable music players -- each
make more than 10% of their sales through online channels. According
to more than 1,000 U.S. adults surveyed by CEA, online consumer
electronics shoppers report higher satisfaction with the purchase
process than those who visited traditional brick and mortar stores,
citing convenience, order accuracy, product variety, product
availability and product information among the top reasons. The
survey also found that consumers who buy at least some of their
products online spend 67% more each year than those who do not make
any purchases online. On average, the online buyer spent $1,500 on
consumer electronics purchases, with 29% of that spent over the
Internet.
