o Report: Microsoft to Launch Portable Media Player by Christmas

New York - Sources close to the matter told Reuters on Wednesday that Microsoft will launch a wireless digital music and video player by Christmas, in a bid to grab market share from Apple's iPod. The device will reportedly allow users to download media over-the-air. "They're proposing an iTunes model approach," a source told Reuters. "They're now interested in controlling the whole vertical stack of technology from the device to the service to the software." The Microsoft portable player project is headed Robbie Bach, president of the company's entertainment and services division, and J. Allard, vice president of the team that launched Microsoft's Xbox video game console. Microsoft declined to comment on the Reuters story.

o Sales Growth for Digital Albums, Songs Buoy Industry in First Half of 2006

Los Angeles - While physical album sales dropped 4.2% in the first half of 2006, strong growth in sales of digital albums (126%) and singles (77%) boosted the overall industry to a slight sales increase over the same period a year ago, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which cited Nielsen SoundScan data. Physical album sales from January through June totaled 270.6 million units, compared with 14.7 million digital albums and 281 million individual song downloads. Universal Music Group accounted for 31.6% of total album sales so far this year, followed by Sony BMG (23.9%), independent distributors (19.3%), Warner Music Gropu (15.9%) and EMI (9%).

o Sirius Adds 600,000 Subscribers During Q2, Outpacing XM's 398,000

New York - Sirius Satellite Radio, a provider of subscription radio programming, announced on Thursday that it beat analysts' expectations for the second quarter of 2006, adding 600,460 net subscribers, a 64% increase over the same period a year ago. The company now counts a total of 4.68 million subscribers, up 158% from its total at the end of the second quarter of 2005. Sirius continues to project it will have 6.2 million subscribers by the end of the year. By comparison, rival XM Satellite Radio added just 398,000 net subscribers during the second quarter, less than the 430,000 analysts had expected. The company still leads overall, with a total of 6.89 million subscribers, but recently lowered its year-end projection from 9 million to 8.5 million subscribers. XM cited supply shortages of its radios and overall weak retail sales for its slowed subscriber growth.

o WSJ: AOL Mulling Plan to Make Service Free

Dulles, Va. - In a bold move to reinvent its business model, AOL could soon begin offering its service free of charge to users who access its content either from a high-speed connection or through another dial-up provider, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Under a proposal from CEO Jonathan Miller, the company would fundamentally change from an Internet service provider to a content provider that derives the vast majority of its revenue from advertising. Subscribers who choose to stay with AOL as their dial-up provider would still have to pay their normal monthly fee -- as much as $25.90 a month -- under the plan, though that number is expected to decline drastically from the current 18.6 million, as many migrate to high-speed connections to take advantage of the offer. AOL would lose as much as $2 billion in subscription revenue under the proposal, but hopes to make it up with increased ad revenue and lower expenses, with thousands of marketing and customer service jobs likely eliminated. AOL has been steadily losing subscribers since the end of 2002, when it had about 26.5 million. The Journal said that a final decision by parent Time Warner is at least several weeks away.

o IFPI to Sue Yahoo China Over Links to Pirated MP3s

London - An international trade group of record labels announced that it plans to sue Yahoo China for copyright infringement, saying the site provides links to unauthorized free song downloads. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said it has not received an acceptable response to a letter it sent Yahoo China in April 2006, in which it asked the company to remove the MP3 links. The IFPI, which also estimates that 85% of all music consumed in China is pirated, is now taking the preliminary steps required by Chinese law for filing a lawsuit. "Yahoo China has been blatantly infringing our members' rights. We have started the process and as far as we're concerned we're on the track to litigation," said IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy, adding, "If negotiation can prevent that, so be it."
