o FCC: U.S. Broadband Lines Increase
34% in 2004 to 37.9 Million
Washington -- Residential and business broadband Internet lines
in the U.S. increased by 34% in 2004, from 28.2 million to 37.9
million lines, according to a report released on Thursday by the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The number of DSL lines
increased 45% in 2004, to 13.8 million, while cable modem lines were
up 30% to 21.4 million lines; the remaining 2.7 million lines
represented satellite, terrestrial wireless, powerline or other
broadband platforms. The FCC defined broadband as connections faster
than 200 kpbs. The FCC also said that broadband is now available in
95% of the nation's zip codes, which are home to 99% of the total
U.S. population.

o Adware
Developer WhenU.com Raises $15 Million
New York -- WhenU.com, a provider of software-based contextual
online advertising (adware), announced that it has added $15 million
to its first round of venture capital financing, which is now closed
at $35 million. The new investment came from Trident Capital; ABS
Capital Partners provided the rest earlier this year. News of the
funding comes just a week after the company's legal victory in the
Second Circuit Court of Appeals, which dismissed claims from a
company that argued WhenU's targeted ad delivery infringed on its
trademarks. When installed on a user's PC, New York-based WhenU's
adware monitors Web surfing, and then delivers targeted ads based on
this data. The company will use the new funds for continued product
development, and for working capital.

o EU Report
Calls for Reform of Internet Licensing for Music
Brussels -- The European Commission has published a report
proposing a number of reforms for the way that music is licensed for
use on the Internet. The Commission said it concluded that the main
obstacle to the growth of legitimate online content services was the
difficulty of securing attractive content for online exploitation.
The Commission said that the present structures for cross-border
collective management of music copyright particularly prevented
music from fulfilling its "unique potential as a driver for online
content services". The report said "entirely new structures" for
cross-border collective management of copyright were required and
that the most effective model for achieving that would be to allow
right-holders to authorize a collecting society of their choice to
manage their works across the entire EU.

o Report:
Top 5 European Markets to See $17 Billion DVD Market in 2009
Dublin, Ireland -- The value of DVD sales and rentals in the five
major European markets (the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Spain)
will grow from $9.3 billion in 2004 to nearly $17 billion in 2009,
according to a report from Dublin-based Research and Markets.
Fighting for consumers' attention with DVD will be digital TV
services, including cable, satellite and free-to-air digital
terrestrial services. While growth of cable TV is expected to remain
flat to slightly negative through 2009, satellite TV is expected to
grow 6%, and free digital terrestrial services will jump from 4.9
million subscribers in 2004 -- or roughly 4.1% of the 120 million TV
households -- to 23.7 million (20% of TV households) in 2009. "New
digital delivery services such as digital terrestrial and IPTV are
not likely to supplant the DVD business, but rather bring digital
entertainment to people by adding either convenience, mobility, or
improved accessibility," the firm said.

o Yahoo Expands
Mobile Search Services
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo on Thursday announced the launch of a
text-message-based mobile search service, and also expanded its
mobile search engine beyond HTML to include the WAP wireless
protocol utilized by many cell phones. Yahoo SMS Search lets users
text a special number ("92466") with requests for local information
or weather reports, and receive Yahoo search results in return. The
company also expanded its full Web search for cell phones to WAP,
which will translate full Web pages and squeeze them to fit on cell
phone screens; previously, only users with phones capable of
displaying HTML could access Yahoo search.
