o Electronic Arts to Boost Value
of Stock Options to Retain Employees
Redwood City, Calif. - In a bid to "retain valuable
employees" in light of the company's falling share price, video game
publisher Electronic Arts said this week it will seek to allow
employees who were granted stock options that are trading lower than
the price at which they can buy them to exchange them for restricted
shares. Redwood City, Calif.-based Electronic Arts has seen its
shares lose nearly a third of their value over the past year. At
their current value, many employees would actually lose money if
they cashed in their stock options. The matter will be presented to
EA shareholders at a meeting later this month. Over 90% of the
company's employees hold stock options that would be eligible for
the exchange.

o Universal Introduces
Three Tiers of Packaging, Pricing for CD Albums
London - Major record label Universal Music Group
announced this week that it will begin distributing three different
versions of new CDs in Europe, with prices that increase based on
added packaging and content. The 9.99 euro ($12.80) Basic version
will come packaged in a cardboard sleeve, and will be used for older
albums and to compete with online services. The Standard CD (14.99
euro/$19.22) will now be packaged in a "Super Jewel Box" -- a
stronger, more durable version of the current plastic jewel box
casing -- with the company absorbing the extra manufacturing costs.
Universal expects to ship 100 million albums in Super Jewel Box
packaging during the first year of the switchover. Finally, limited
edition Deluxe CD releases, for major artists, will include a bonus
CD or DVD and cost 19.99 euro/$25.63. "As our digital business
continues to accelerate, as we anticipated, this is also an exciting
time to improve our physical CD offer -- and at no extra cost to the
fans," said Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music
Group International.
