o College Cable, Internet Network Burly Bear Shuts Down

New York -- Burly Bear, a cable TV and Internet network that targeted
students on college campuses, has shut down after failing to raise
additional financing, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter. The
company raised $12.5 million in venture capital last April. "The board and
I have made the decision to cease operations," Burly Bear CEO Howard
Handler wrote in a letter to employees. "In the end, we couldn't overcome
the difficult state of the capital markets. Emerging cable networks and
media companies need more running room to achieve profitability than the
current investment climate will accommodate." New York-based Burly Bear
made deals with several cable TV operators, as well as over 600 college
campuses to have its channel added to the closed circuit networks offered
to students living on campus.

o Yahoo Surprises Investors, Posts 24% Revenue Increase for Quarter

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Web portal Yahoo announced its quarterly earnings on
Wednesday afternoon, surprising investors and Wall Street by turning a
profit and posting a 24 percent increase in revenue for the second quarter
of 2002. The company posted earnings of $225.8 million for the quarter,
compared with $182.2 million for the same period a year ago. While Yahoo's
revenue from online advertising fell 4 percent to $135.7 million, other
areas such as its revenue from paid listings climbed 109 percent to $74.1
million. "A year ago we said we would shift our revenues to fees and
listings, and that we would return to profitability. We have done that,"
said Yahoo CEO Terry Semel.

o Report: Portable Digital Music Player Owners Expected to Double by 2003

Park Ridge, N.J. -- The number of online consumers who own a portable
digital music player is expected to double by the year 2003, according to
a consumer survey commissioned by Sony Electronics recently conducted by
Harris Interactive. The survey found that 21 percent of the U.S.
population ages 15 to 35 with Internet access currently owns at least one
portable digital audio player, and 54 percent plan to buy one by the end
of 2003. The survey also found that 64 percent of respondents knew how to
"rip" CDs onto their computers; 78 percent of those surveyed knew how to
download music off of the Internet. Respondents reported that the
enjoyment of downloading comes from being able to customize music
collections (83 percent), the ability to choose from a large selection of
songs (76 percent) and its simplicity (61 percent). The Harris Interactive
survey was culled from 1,960 interviews from June 12 to June 17, among
U.S. residents ages 15 to 35, weighted to reflect the U.S. online
population.
