o U.S. House Approves Bill to
Restrict Internet Gambling
Washington - The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday
voted in favor of a bill that aims to crack down on Internet
gambling, CNET News.com reported. Supported by most Republicans and
opposed by most Democrats, the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act would target Internet service providers, as well as
banks and credit card companies that facilitate the placement of
wagers on offshore gambling websites by U.S. citizens. One exception
would be Internet-based gambling on horse races; Democrats including
Rep. John Conyers (Mich.) criticized the bill as being unnecessary
and riddled with such loopholes. CNET reports that the Senate has
not made Internet gambling legislation a priority, and it may not
come up during the short time left before the end of the
election-year Congressional session.

o Microsoft Developing
Xbox-branded Portable Player, Media Retail Service
Seattle - The Seattle Times reported on Tuesday that
Microsoft intends to release a line of Xbox-branded digital media
products -- including a media player application and online media
retail service -- in addition to a device designed to compete with
Apple's iPod. The paper based its report on "research, reporting and
information from a source close to the project," which is codenamed
"Argo." Microsoft has reportedly committed "hundreds of millions" of
dollars to produce and market the device, application and service.
Bloomberg News reported last week that Microsoft's Wi-Fi-capable
iPod competitor device will ship to retailers in time for the
holiday shopping season.

o WSJ: Plan
to Make AOL "Free" Would Cost $1 Billion in Profits Through '09
Dulles, Va. - If parent company Time Warner adopts a plan
to transform AOL into a largely ad-supported service, the media
giant will have to deal with some major financial repercussions in
the near term, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.
According to internal company forecasts obtained by the Journal, AOL
would give up nearly $1 billion in operating profits through 2009,
as its subscriber base -- which currently accounts for the bulk of
its revenue -- dwindles from 18.6 million to just over 6 million.
The Journal article said that in the long run, company officials
feel that the growth of its revenue from Internet advertising would
ultimately increase its profitability. Under the proposal, first
disclosed last week, AOL would begin offering its service free of
charge to users who access its content either from a high-speed
connection or through another dial-up provider. Subscribers who
choose to stay with AOL as their dial-up provider would continue to
pay their normal monthly fee, which is as much as $25.90 a month.

Site GUBA to Offer Sony Feature Films for Download
San Francisco - Video-sharing site GUBA announced on

premium online video service. The deal is GUBA's second with a major
studio, having signed a similar agreement with Warner Bros.

Evolution," "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Bridge on the River Kwai"
will be available for purchase and download, with new releases
selling for $19.99 and catalog titles from $9.99. Sony expects to
offer some 500 films on GUBA within the next year, including
day-and-date releases with DVD. Some titles will also be offered for

o Report:
Half of Video Cell Phone Service Subscribers Don't Use Video
Menlo Park, Calif. - Half of those who subscribe to video
cell phone services -- as well as 30% of video iPod owners -- never
use the devices for viewing video, according to a report from market
research firm Knowledge Networks. The firm projects that the
proportion of video iPod or video cell phone owners who actually
watch video on the devices is just 3% of the 13-54 year-old
broadband population. By contrast, nearly 17% of the same group
reported using laptops to view downloaded or streaming video. Among
laptop video users, 23% said they have paid for video downloads,
while around 88% said they world watch a commercial in exchange for
free downloadable or streaming video.

Pasadena, Calif. - Dot-com billionaire and Dallas

Slated to launch in October, the one-hour "Dan Rather Reports"
program will be "completely uncensored." "Now that he is finally
released from the ratings driven and limited depth confines of
broadcast television, I am excited about the impact Dan can have on
the future of news," said HDNet co-founder Mark Cuban. "Hard news
needs backers who won't back down. Mark Cuban is such a leader,"
said Rather. "As a team player I intend to give Mark and HDNet all
