o AEG, AOL and XM Partner on Live Event Broadcasting Venture

New York -- America Online, XM Satellite Radio and AEG, a sports and entertainment events production company, announced on Tuesday they have formed a joint venture, Network Live, that will simultaneously deliver live entertainment programs through the Internet, satellite radio, and other platforms like video-on-demand, wireless and HDTV. The companies recently collaborated on the broadcast of the Live 8 charity benefit concerts. Kevin Wall, who served as executive producer of Live 8, was named CEO of Network Live. The company will mainly broadcast live from AEG-owned or operated venues, such as the Staples Center in Los Angeles. "We're thrilled to enter this market with the unique opportunity to immediately tap into AOL's vast audience, AEG's relationships with the most popular performers in the music industry, and XM's growing subscriber base," said Network Live co-founder and CEO Kevin Wall.

o Broadcasters Agree to Proposed 2009 Digital TV Transition

Washington -- At a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the digital television transition in Washington on Tuesday, TV broadcasters said they would accept a 2009 deadline to switch to digital broadcasting, Reuters reported. While broadcasters won't be ready to broadcast digitally until 2009, currently all U.S. TVs will be required to include a digital tuner by July 1, 2007. Broadcasters won't be required to switch to digital until at least 85% of consumers in a given market have digital sets. Some lawmakers are pushing for a speedier transition, so that analog spectrum currently used by broadcasters can be freed up for emergency communications services. "The bombings last week in London reinforce the immediate need for this spectrum," said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). A subsidy for those who can't afford the costly new digital TVs has also been proposed to speed the transition. "If you want an uproar from the people of this country, you have their televisions turned off," remarked Sen. George Allen (R-Va.).

o CBS Launching 24-Hour Broadband News Network

New York -- Viacom's CBS Digital Media and CBS News on Tuesday announced plans to launch a 24-hour broadband news network at CBSNews.com. The new site will receive "significant investment" as part of CBS' "cable bypass" strategy, to provide continuous news online in lieu of a 24-hour cable news network. The site's new home page will showcase some of the 25,000 free on-demand video clips offered, including some not yet broadcast on the network. A new blog called "Public Eye," hosted by Vaughn Ververs and scheduled to launch in late summer, will serve to create a dialogue between journalists and the public and attempt to make the newsgathering process more transparent. CBS News correspondents and producers who will now also be reporting directly for the web include Bob Schieffer, Harry Smith, John Roberts, Bill Plante and Mark Knoller. CBS Digital Media president Larry Kramer named former CBS News vice president of product development Betsy Morgan as senior vice president and general manager of the new CBSNews.com. "This represents a significant shift for CBS News," said CBS News president Andrew Heyward. "We are redefining the mission of CBS News and the people who work here to meet the demands of a 24-hour digital universe."

o Dutch Judge Rules File-Swappers' Privacy Outweighs Copyright Concerns

Amsterdam -- A Dutch judge has ruled that ISPs in Holland cannot be compelled to turn over the identities of suspected Internet file-swappers to entertainment companies, citing privacy rights, Reuters reported. The judge said the Dutch copyright agency Brein "may have accessed private files" in the course of its investigation to identify file-swappers first by their Internet IP addresses. Brein manager Tim Kuik told Reuters the agency will appeal the ruling to a higher court. For now, the identities of Dutch customers of ISPs including UPC, Essent, Tiscali, Wanadoo and KPN who trade files on peer-to-peer networks will remain anonymous to the major record labels and movie studios anxious to file copyright infringement actions against them.

o MP3 Digital Audio Format Turns Ten Years Old This Week

Erlangen, Germany -- The now-ubiquitous MP3 format will turn ten years old on Thursday, July 14, according to Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, which invented the audio compression technology in 1995. The format was internationally standardized in 1992, but didn't become known as MP3 until an e-mail dated July 14, 1995 circulated the approval of the file name extension .mp3. "This is the overwhelming result of our poll: everyone voted for .mp3 as extension for ISO MPEG Audio Layer 3!" wrote Fraunhofer's Juergen Zeller. An estimated 80 million MP3 players are expected to be sold in 2006.

o Report: 2005 U.K. Song Download Sales Hit 10 Million

London -- More than 10 million song downloads have been sold in the U.K. so far this year, nearly twice the number sold in all of 2004, according to a report from the British Phonographic Industry trade group. "The record industry has enthusiastically embraced the new legal download services since their emergence in the mainstream little more than a year ago and now we're beginning to reap the rewards," said BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said. "The battle against illegal file-sharing will continue, but we are delighted to have hit this milestone so soon." The report noted that a remix of the track "Axel F" called "Crazy Frog" -- originally distributed as an animated cell phone ringtone -- sold over 450,000 across all formats during the second quarter of 2005.

o ICANN Approves ".mobi" Suffix for Mobile Phone Websites

Paris -- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that it has approved the new ".mobi" suffix, which will be specially designed for mobile phone websites. mTLD Top Level Domain -- a joint venture comprising Hutchison 3, the GSM Association, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Syniverse Technologies, TIM, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone -- will handle the registration of names on the ".mobi" domain, ICANN said. The mTLD joint venture, which hopes that consumers will be more likely to upgrade mobile phones if more websites are optimized specifically for handheld devices, lobbied heavily for the new suffix. "As .mobi will encourage the usage of advanced functionalities in mobile devices, the market potential for those devices will increase," mTLD said. ICANN said the first websites for mobile devices would be ready by next year.
