o Prince Shutters Subscription-Based Online Music Club

Los Angeles - Recording artist Prince has shut down his online music club, which offered fans exclusive access to unreleased music and early concert ticket sales, Billboard reported. Launched in 2001, the NPG Music Club offered a $100 annual membership that included special features like access to soundchecks at Prince concerts, and invites to post-concert parties. After complaints about the ticketing section of the site, Prince lowered the membership costs, to $2.50 per month or $25 per year. "In its current form, there is a feeling that the NPGMC has gone as far as it can go," reads a statement on the site. "Has the time come to once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These are questions we in the NPG need to answer. In doing so, we have decided to put the club on hiatus until further notice."

o Report: Major Media Brands Embracing "Pre-Roll" Streaming Video Ads

Monterey, Calif. - The number of video streams preceded by advertisements ("pre-roll") has grown an average of 105% annually over the past five years, compared with 72% annual average growth for free or ad-supported content streams, according to a report from AccuStream Research. The analysis includes videos from major media entities, but does not take into account community-generated video content. During the first four months of 2006, major media brands streamed an average of 1.2 billion videos each month, with 94% of these containing pre-roll ads. Yahoo led the market with 24% of pre-roll ad streams, followed by Time Warner (13.7%), Microsoft (11.4%) and Viacom (8.5%). "The high double-digit growth rates seen in pre-roll ad units reflects just how much broadband publishing has caught the attention of rights holders," said AccuStream research director Paul A. Palumbo. "Five years after broadband streams surpassed narrowband, 2006 is quite noteworthy for the number of broadband extensions rolling out."

ESPN will add letterbox bars to its Thursday Night Football college football broadcasts, in a bid to promote its high-definition broadcasts to viewers with standard-definition TV sets, TVWeek.com reported. The idea is to expose viewers with regular televisions to the widescreen aspect ratio that is commonplace on HDTV sets. "We're taking the medium and using it to educate the public about what's out there," said Bryan Burns, ESPN vice president for strategic business planning and development. "We cannot go into their homes and put more pixels into their TV sets.
