o Report: Video Game Sales Up Surprising 25% in June

Port Washington, N.Y. - Video game sales rose an unexpected 25% during the month of June, with hardware sales up 25% and game sales rising 15%, according to data from market research firm NPD Group. Game sales for the month totaled $444.4 million, up from $387.1 million a year ago. The Nintendo DS handheld led overall game console sales with 593,400 units, followed by the PlayStation 2 (311,900 units) and Xbox 360 (277,000 units); overall hardware sales for the month totaled $297.8 million. "It's really a case of the whole being worth more than the sum of the parts," NPD analyst Anita Frazier told the Associated Press. "That the increases were so widespread -- and not limited to one company or platform -- points to the overall health of the industry." The unexpected sales growth spurred most video game stocks higher on Friday, including shares of Electronic Arts, THQ, Activision and Take-Two Interactive.

o Time Warner Stock Hits 52-Week Low; Could Spur Talk of AOL Spin-Off

Dulles, Va. - The stock price of Time Warner, the parent company of AOL, hit a new 52-week low on Friday, amid concerns about its strategy for AOL and a downturn in valuations for its cable assets. The Nasdaq ended down 0.8% on Friday, capping its worst 3-day performance since April, 2005. Time Warner's stock closed at $15.97 per share -- its lowest level in over a year. The lagging share price could put renewed pressure on CEO Richard Parsons to step down -- or to spin off AOL as a separate company. At a meeting on Aug. 2, the company is expected to announce its new strategy for shifting AOL toward an ad-supported model, while moving it away from its traditional subscription-based model.

o Gracenote, Music Publishers to Bring Song Lyrics to Online Stores

Emeryville, Calif. - Gracenote, a provider of a database of music information and CD identification services, announced this week that it has signed agreements with the major music publishers for the rights to distribute song lyrics online. The company's deals with BMG Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Peermusic and other publishers will likely result in the addition of song lyrics to the album cover art and other extras provided when users purchase digital songs at online retailers like iTunes and Rhapsody. The lyrics feature could also aid consumers in identifying songs for which they may know a line or phrase, but not the title of the song. "We anticipate that you'll see different kinds of offers in the market, where lyrics are combined with recorded music in a total package like a subscription," Gracenote VP of business development Ross Blanchard told Reuters. "This extra element should help drive sales growth. There are a lot of ways the services will derive value outside of adding an extra charge." The big music publishers have also recently targeted unauthorized sites that offer free lyrics -- like Lyrics.com and AZLyrics.com -- with cease-and-desist letters; it's possible these sites will now be approached to license Gracenote's lyrics database.

o Report: Blue Laser Market to Generate $28 Billion in Sales in 2010

Santa Clara, Calif. - Devices utilizing new blue laser technology, including HD DVD and Blu-ray DVD players and disc drives, and the PlayStation 3, are expected to generate $28 billion in sales in 2010, according to a report from Santa Clara Consulting Group (SCGG). In particular, the PlayStation 3 is expected to account for more than half of the $2 billion in blue laser-related revenue for 2006. For 2010, the firm projects $4 billion in sales for blue laser DVD players; $3 billion in sales of movies for these players; $4 billion in sales for blue laser PC drives; and sales of $400 million for blank media for these devices. In the games arena, SCGG predicts $6 billion in sales for blue laser-based game consoles in 2010, and $10 billion in sales of games for these consoles. "Currently the market seems to be preoccupied with the format battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD technologies; what is overlooked is the fact that a market is developing and the opportunity is huge," said SCGG managing director David Bunzel.

New York - Video game publisher Atari announced this week that it has sold its "Driver" game franchise, and the assets of its U.K.-based Reflections game development studio, to France-based publisher Ubisoft for $24 million. Under the deal, Reflections' 80 employees will receive contracts at Ubisoft. Atari will also retain rights to "Driver: Parallel Lines" through 2006, and the rights to all other games from the franchise for the next three months. The "Driver" franchise has to date sold more than 14 million units worldwide. "We are focusing the energy of the company on a select number of franchises in order to optimize their impact among consumers and increase shareholder value," said Atari CEO Bruno Bonnell. o Toshiba Delays Release of First HD DVD Recorder in Japan

Tokyo - Japanese consumer electronics firm Toshiba announced this week that it has delayed the release of its first HD DVD recorder until the end of the month, due to a lack of adequate supply. The $3,450 RD-A1 -- the first recorder for Toshiba's next-generation DVD format -- was set for release in Japan on July 14, but will now ship to retailers there on July 27. The company added that the supply problems were only temporary, and caused by an unexpected delay in procuring some components of the devices. Toshiba currently does not plan to introduce the RD-A1 in the U.S.
