o Video Game Network IGN Entertainment Files for IPO

Brisbane, Calif. -- IGN Entertainment, a provider of video game news and information, announced this week that it has filed for an initial public offering on the Nasdaq exchange. While the company has not disclosed the number of shares to be sold, or their offering price, the website IPO Monitor estimated the offering will raise $200 million. Brisbane, Calif.-based IGN was once previously a public company under a different name -- Snowball -- before being taken private and subsequently acquiring a slate of companies over the past several years. The company's network of video game, movie and entertainment sites includes GameSpy, Rotten Tomatoes, AskMen.com, FilePlanet, Direct2Drive, TeamXbox, 3D Gamers and GameStats.com. IGN said that Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. and Lehman Brothers Inc. will act as joint book-running managers for the offering, while UBS Securities and Jefferies Broadview will serve as co-managers.

o Survey: 58% of Consumers Currently Favor Blu-ray Over HD DVD

Washington -- A recent survey found that consumers currently favor Sony's Blu-ray next-generation DVD format over rival Toshiba's HD DVD. While neither device format has been released, both are expected to hit store shelves during the holiday shopping season. Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed by Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates (PSB) favored Blu-ray, while 26% were undecided and only 16% favored HD DVD. As background, the respondents were provided information such as which technology companies, film studios, video game consoles, storage capacity and estimated launch dates will support each format. "Consumers perceive Blu-Ray as the favorite on technology company support, gaming, storage and disc lifestyle," said PSB's Mark Penn. The survey did not provide respondents with information on other key factors, such as pricing for the devices.

o EU Frees Up Radio Spectrum to Encourage Wi-Fi Networks

Brussels -- The European Commission announced that it has made available a substantial amount of radio spectrum throughout the EU for new Wi-Fi networks. As of Oct. 31, the EU will make two specific frequency bands (5150-5350 MHz and 5470-5725 MHz) available in all member states for Wi-Fi. The Commission said access to "an open and competitive" single market for wireless access systems would make equipment cheaper and alleviate the growing overloading of spectrum, as well as promote the public and private take-up of wireless systems. "Today's Commission decision will help industry to create innovative services, such as wireless Voice over IP (Internet telephony), for a single European market," said EU Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding.

o Briefly Noted:

(Redwood City, Calif.) Video game publisher Electronic Arts announced that it will delay the release of its "The Godfather: The Game" title for PlayStation 2, Xbox and the PC until early 2006. A version for next-generation consoles like the Xbox 360 will be delayed even longer. "Releasing the game in early 2006 allows us more time to perfect the open-world experience of being a member of the Corleone family," said EA executive producer David DeMartini. A recent report in The New York Times indicated that EA might not be able to use much of the voiceover work recorded by actor Marlon Brando before his death, as the recording was made while Brando was assisted by a breathing tube. Director Francis Ford Coppola has also publicly distanced himself from the game.

(Washington) Hoping to make its site more relevant to readers and advertisers, Washingtonpost.com on Friday launched a new version of its site that serves one version of its home page to local readers and another to out-of-towners. The company said that while 80% of its 8.5 million registered users are from outside the DC area, local readers tend to frequent the site more often and stay for longer periods. Most of the content on the page will be the same, but shuffled around to separate local and national stories. The version readers will see will depend on the zip code they submitted when registering for the site.

(Los Angeles) The American Film Institute (AFI) announced on Friday that it will hold its AFI Digital Content Festival on July 20 in Hollywood, Calif. The event will showcase the best new digital and interactive content produced during the past year. In addition, the AFI Digital Content Lab (formerly the Enhanced Television Workshop) has accepted six companies -- A&E, Reuters, Simmons Lathan Media Group, Telemundo, WWE and Zodiac Gaming -- who have developed new interactive TV projects at its workshop, which will be shown at the festival. "Our intention is to inspire great work in these exciting new media forms and to provide a common ground for everyone who wants to create great entertainment in our shared digital future," said AFI director and CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg.

(Atlanta) Verizon Wireless on Friday debuted the latest single from country singer Gretchen Wilson as a ringtone, at the same time as the song was sent to radio, but before it is available in stores on Sept. 27. The $2.49 "All Jacked Up" ringtone is part of an ongoing promotion called Cingular Sounds, which offers ringtones of new singles before their availability on record.

(New York) Video game publisher Take-Two Interactive on Friday released its video game adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," under license from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance and the PC features the likeness of actor Johnny Depp -- who plays Willy Wonka in the Warner Bros. film -- as well as the voices and likenesses of fellow actors including Freddie Highmore, David Kelly and Julia Winter. (Cypress, Calif.) Japanese video game developer Bandai Games announced on Friday that it plans to publish "The Legend of Heroes" for the PSP, developed by Tokyo-based Nihon Falcom, in September. (San Francisco) BusinessWeek Online recently published an opinion piece that postulated that satellite radio providers XM and Sirius should merge to become a single company. Since Sirius launched a year after XM, in 2002, the company's market share has grown from 11% in 2003 to approach 33% by the end of 2005. "Financially, [a merger or an alliance] would make a lot of sense," Craig Mathias, founder of wireless consultancy Farpoint Group, told BusinessWeek. While the companies have denied negotiations, XM chairman Gary Parsons didn't specifically rule out the idea. "It's more important to differentiate ourselves from the other technologies and services that are out there than for either Sirius or us to differentiate ourselves from one another," Parsons told BusinessWeek.

(San Francisco) CNET News.com reported on Friday on how the recent Supreme Court ruling against file-sharing software companies is affecting independent, open-source developers of peer-to-peer file-sharing software. It's unclear whether nonprofit, open-source projects like Shareaza and Azureus will be affected by the ruling, which included wording to the effect that companies cannot base their business on the illegal trade of intellectual property. "The ruling never said that P2P technologies were bad or should be avoided," Olivier Chalouhi, founder of an open-source BitTorrent client project called Azureus, told News.com. "As software developers, and as technology makers, we've not changed anything." One legal expert thinks such developers should exercise caution. "I think individuals behind it could be liable," intellectual property attorney Jeffrey D. Neuburger told News.com. "They have to be very careful about how they position themselves. They have to release the software out there and not say anything about it."
