o Report: Nearly 50% of U.S. Homes to Have DVD by Year's End

Las Vegas -- As the industry is set to ship its one billionth DVD later
this month, 50 percent of U.S. homes are expected to own either a DVD
player or computer equipped with a DVD-ROM drive by the end of this year,
according to a report released on Wednesday by the DVD Entertainment Group
(DEG), an industry trade association. In the first half of 2002, 8.1
million DVD players shipped to retail, a 53 percent increase over the same
period last year. "If growth continues at the current rate, DVD will be in
more than 40 million households by the end of 2002," said DEG board member
and Panasonic executive Reid Sullivan. "When you also include the growing
number of PCs with DVD-ROM drives and game consoles with DVD capability,
nearly 50 percent of U.S. homes will have the format by year-end."
Additionally, according to figures compiled by Ernst & Young on behalf of
the DEG, more than 272 million DVD movies and music videos shipped in the
first six months of 2002, an 80 percent increase over the same period last
year. Since the inception of the format in 1997, software shipments in
North America have reached more than 947 million units. At this rate, the
industry expects to ship its billionth DVD later this month.

o AOL Time Warner's RoadRunner Blocking File-Sharing for Some Users

New York -- AOL Time Warner's RoadRunner high-speed Internet service has
begun to block some of its users from using file-sharing services
including Kazaa, Grokster and IMesh, according to a story in Silicon Alley
Reporter. First noted on technology discussion board Slashdot, the
blocking seems to be limited to users who have designated themselves as
"super nodes," or a kind of central server where lists of files available
on many other users' computers are located. A Time Warner spokesperson
confirmed the blocking to SAR, saying the move was intended to "slow down
the upstream speed and prevent general bandwidth degradation," but added
that, "this is not broad program, or something that is going to go on a
continuous basis."

o Apple Releases New iPods; MusicMatch Deal Brings Player to PC Users

New York -- Apple announced on Wednesday new versions of its iPod digital
music players, as well as new software from San Diego-based MusicMatch
that will make the devices compatible with Windows-based PCs. A new
20GB-capacity iPod will go on sale in August for $499; the 10GB sells for
$399 and a 5GB model is now priced at $299. The iPod will be compatible
with newer PCs that come equipped with a FireWire port -- also known as
IEEE 1394 and i.LINK -- a faster connection than USB that is a standard
feature on Mac computers. Instead of Apple's iTunes music playlist
software, iPod owners with PCs will use MusicMatch Jukebox software to
organize their collections.

o CD Copy-Protection Firm TTR Technologies Gets Nasdaq Delisting Notice

New York -- TTR Technologies, a developer of anti-piracy products for the
software and entertainment industries, announced that it has received
notice from the Nasdaq that its shares will be delisted from the exchange
on Oct. 7, barring the company's ability to raise its share price above
the $1 Nasdaq minimum requirement. The company's shares have been trading
below $1 since May. New York-based TTR Technologies has a deal with
anti-piracy firm Macrovision to jointly develop its SafeAudio CD
copy-protection technology, and said it is also developing copy-protection
technology for DVD-ROM discs.

online links to CDs, concert tickets, auctions and other artist-related
information. The new Pennsylvania-based company was created through a
merger of Swiss firm Yes International AG and Connexus, which developed
the StarCD radio song ID service. Listeners of 1000 U.S. radio stations

(New York) The New York Times recently reported on how artist Bruce
Springsteen is attempting to prevent songs on his upcoming album from
appearing on file-sharing services. Unlike most other artists, Springsteen
has released only a handful of advance copies to journalists, and few
"outside his inner circle" have heard the album. On the other hand, many
other albums find their way onto file-sharing services weeks ahead of
their release date. "If you're trying to have a hit song and really have a
phenomenon, the momentum of huge word-of-mouth and media exposure may be
worth creating or risking a leak," Danny Goldberg, former chief executive
for the Mercury and Warner Brothers labels and current chief of the
independent Artemis Records, told The New York Times.
