o U.S. Detains CEO of U.K. Internet Gambling Site BetOnSports

London - Days after the U.S. House passed a bill to restrict online gambling in the U.S., the CEO of one of the biggest U.K.-based online casinos has been arrested in the U.S. on a charge related to illegal gambling, according to published reports. BetOnSports CEO David Carruthers was detained at the Dallas/Forth Worth airport on Sunday by U.S. authorities while switching flights on his way to Costa Rica, where his company maintains some operations. It is not clear whether the arrest is tied to U.S. lawmakers' efforts to clamp down on overseas gambling operations, which derive up to 90% of their revenue bettors in the U.S. -- where online gambling is illegal. The news sent shares of BetOnSports plummeting 24%, while other sites including PartyGaming, Sportingbet and 888 Holdings also experienced share price fallout.

o Dutch Court Rules File-Swapper Identities Protected Under Privacy Laws

London - A Dutch appellate court has impeded the music industry's anti-piracy efforts there, striking down requests that would have compelled Internet service providers including Wanadoo and Tiscali to reveal the identities of suspected file-swappers, The Register reported. The Dutch Protection Rights Entertainment Industry Netherlands (BREIN) had been seeking the identities of 42 alleged file-swappers, and engaged U.S.-based Media Sentry to collect IP addresses and other data on alleged copyright infringements on file-sharing networks. The Dutch court ruled that Media Sentry's practice is illegal under European privacy laws, and further said the company's methods do not ensure proper identification or credible evidence of copyright infringement. BREIN said it will appeal the ruling to a higher Dutch court.
