o RIAA Lobbying for "Broadcast Flag" to Stem Recording of Streaming Audio

Washington -- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has
been contacting information technology and consumer electronics firms to
push for a "broadcast flag" to be inserted into streaming radio stations,
to prevent them from being recorded off of the Internet, satellite or
cable broadcasts, CNET News.com reported. RIAA senior vice president of
government relations Mitch Glazier said the technology would be used to
thwart programs such as StreamRipper, which can record streaming audio
signals to a hard drive. "The device would say this is broadcast material
not meant for redistribution. It's really the same model for what's
already been happening on the video side," Glazier told CNET News.com. The
concept of a similar "broadcast flag" for digital television signals has
already gained approval from an industry standards group, but has drawn
criticism from opponents who say the technology will strip consumers of
their traditional "fair use" rights.

o Bob Pittman Resigns As COO of AOL Time Warner

Dulles, Va. -- Amid a sharp contraction in online advertising, AOL Time
Warner COO Bob Pittman, who was leading America Online on an interim
basis, resigned from the company on Thursday. Pittman helped build AOL
into an Internet powerhouse before joining the senior ranks of the merged
company. After announcing Pittman's resignation, AOL Time Warner said it
has promoted HBO head Jeff Bewkes and Time Inc. head Don Logan to top
positions. The management changes are likely to give more power to Time
Warner executives in New York -- at the expense of Virginia-based America
Online.

o Search Technology Firm Inktomi Lays Off 40%, Buys Software Firm Quiver

Foster City, Calif. -- Inktomi, a provider of search engine technology,
announced that it will lay off 40 percent of its staff, or 270 employees,
as part of a continuing plan to reduce costs and focus on its core
business. The company laid off a total of about 400 workers last year in
its efforts to become solely a provider of search engine technology. As
part of its plan, Foster City, Calif.-based Inktomi also announced that it
has acquired San Mateo-based Quiver, a provider of categorization and
taxonomy software, for $12 million in cash and stock.

o P2P Firm CenterSpan Partners with Video-on-Demand Provider CinemaNow

Hillsboro, Ore. -- CenterSpan Communications, a provider of secure
peer-to-peer file-sharing network services, announced on Thursday a
technology integration and marketing alliance with video-on-demand
provider CinemaNow, which is majority-owned by film studio Lion's Gate
Entertainment. Under the agreement, Oregon-based CenterSpan's secure
peer-to-peer C-StarOne network will be integrated with Marina del Rey,
Calif.-based CinemaNow's PatchBay software for managing, syndicating and
reporting on the usage of streaming and downloadable digital video files.
The two companies said the combination of their services will allow
content owners, film distributors and retailers to deploy and deliver
subscription and pay-per-view models without investing in hardware,
development and implementation.

o Briefly Noted:

(Redwood City, Calif.) Game developer Electronic Arts said on Thursday
that it has signed an agreement with actor Pierce Brosnan, who has played
the character of James Bond in several films, to use Brosnan's likeness in
their upcoming video game, "James Bond 007: NightFire." Created from an
original storyline, the title for Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox,
Nintendo GameCube and the PC will be released at the same time as the next
Bond movie, "Die Another Day," in November. Dallas, Texas-based Gearhead

Software and Redwood City, Calif.-based Electronic Arts.

(New York) Palm Digital Media, a division of handheld device maker Palm,
on Thursday released versions of its e-book reader software, originally
developed for handhelds, for Mac and Windows operating systems. The
company said that a different version of Palm Reader is necessary for each
platform, but after that e-books can be transferred and read on all four
platforms without modification.

(Tel Aviv) Midbar Tech, a developer of CD copy-protection technology, on
Thursday released a new version of its technology that will help prevent
users from making copies of CDs played on Mac computers. Israel-based
Midbar's Cactus Data Shield-200.4.0 also includes a feature that lets
record labels add extra multimedia content to discs. The company says its
technology has been used to deter the unauthorized copying of over 10
million commercially released CDs.

(Greeley, Colo.) Family Shield Technologies has released a device called
the Movie Shield, which can be used to censor movies in the home. The
device connects to a PC and downloads information on movies the company
has reviewed -- which number at least 50 at this time -- and is then
connected between a VCR or DVD player and a television. Viewers can set
their own parameters to censor films based on "vain references to deity,
minor language, major language, nudity, sexual situations, violence, gore
and immodesty." The technology either "blanks" the TV screen or mutes the
audio signal as appropriate to filter offensive content.

(San Diego) Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) announced that it will release
a Mac version of its massively multiplayer online roleplaying game
"EverQuest" in January. San Diego-based SOE said it will also release Mac
versions of expansion packs for the game, including "The Shadows of
Luclin," "The Ruins of Kunark" and "The Scars of Velious."

books and video games, announced that it has signed a licensing agreement

Best Buy and Tower Records.

(New York) USA Today recently reported on how the federal government's
mandate for all TV stations to begin broadcasting digitally is affecting
smaller market, independently owned television stations. The full
transition can cost as much as $3 million per station. "The cost really
doesn't vary a whole hell of a lot whether you're in New York or Yakima,"
Elizabeth Murphy Burns, president of Duluth, Minn.-based Morgan Murphy
Stations, told USA Today. "In some cases, the cost of converting to
digital is more than the station is worth. Right now, we're sort of
stymied."

(Washington) CNET News.com provided coverage of Wednesday's U.S. Commerce Department roundtable discussion on digital rights management
technologies, during which a number of free software advocates attempted
to disrupt the proceeding, which they deemed unfair because they were not
represented. On the official panel for the roundtable were representatives
from the Motion Picture Association of America, Walt Disney, the Recording
Industry Association of America, Microsoft, Intel, News Corp., the Home
Recording Rights Coalition and DigitalConsumer.org.

City bar that has rigged two Apple iPod digital music players with a
professional DJ mixer, allowing bar patrons to try their hand at mixing a

the other 10GB device holds about 2,000 tracks for the amateur DJs to
choose from.
