o Japan's Game Industry Sets
Voluntary Ban on 18-Rated Sales to Minors
Tokyo -- Japan's video game industry trade group has introduced a
voluntary ban on the sale of 18-rated games to minors by retailers
in the country, in a bid to preempt potential government actions.
The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) has asked
retailers to refuse sales of games rated 18-plus by the Computer
Entertainment Rating Organization to minors, unless accompanied by a
parent or guardian, and also to place information on video game
ratings in their stores. CESA's Kiyoshi Komatsu told
GamesIndustry.biz that 95% of Japanese game retailers support the
ban, although under the CESA plan as it exists no penalties are
provided for retailers who sell violent games to minors.

o 2005 Mobile
Phone Sales to Exceed "Most Optimistic" Expectations
London -- A new report by market analysis firm Gartner estimates
that mobile phone sales worldwide will increase to more than 780
million this year. What's more, the report goes on to predict that
total global sales will come to more than 1 billion by the year
2009. Both figures far exceed Gartner's previous estimates. Although
there are currently about 2.6 billion phones in use, Gartner
estimates that about 7.5 billion handsets have been produced so far
between the years of 1997 and 2009 -- more than one phone for every
single person on the planet. "The world's appetite for mobile phones
has exceeded even the most optimistic expectations," said Gartner
Research Vice President Ben Wood. "Mobile phones could go on to be
the most common consumer electronics device on the planet."

o Fox, Loews
and WideRay Partner for In-Theater Downloads Via Bluetooth
Los Angeles -- Twentieth Century Fox announced on Wednesday that
it has partnered with Loews Theaters and technology firm WideRay to
provide downloads of movie trailers, ringtones, and other content to
moviegoers' Bluetooth-enabled cell phones. When consumers with
Bluetooth wireless connections near a WideRay theater kiosk, they
will receive notification of the availability of free movie-related
content sent to their cell phones. They may then download a free,
full-length movie trailer to their phones in less than 30 seconds
from the kiosk. The download does not incur carrier charges, as the
transfer is made directly from kiosk to phone. The technology is
currently being tested at Loews theaters in New York's Lincoln
Square, Los Angeles' Universal Citywalk and San Francisco's Metreon,
which are offering trailers and other content from Fox's "Mr. and
Mrs. Smith," "Fantastic Four" and "Kingdom of Heaven." "Twentieth
Century Fox continues to push for new and innovative channels to
reach our movie-goers, to give them ways to interact with our movies
before and after they enjoy the films on the big screen," said Fox
co-president of marketing Pamela Levine.

o Report:
Broadband "Officially" Overtakes Dial-Up in U.K.
London -- According to the latest figures from the U.K. Office
for National Statistics (ONS), broadband has officially overtaken
dial-up as the most popular way to connect to the Internet.
Broadband overtook dial-up in May, at which point it accounted for
50.7% of all connections. Although the take-up of broadband, which
grew by about 80% last year, has outpaced dial-up for quite some
time, the most-recent ONS report marks the first time that broadband
has actually accounted for the majority of all Internet connections
in the U.K. Those findings are all the more remarkable when one
considers the fact that, little more than four years ago, broadband
accounted for less than 1% of all connections.
