o WTO to Probe Whether U.S. 'Net
Gambling Laws Violate Intl. Accords
Geneva - The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced on
Wednesday that it has established a panel that will investigate
whether U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling violate international
trade rules, the Associated Press reported. The island nation of
Antigua and Barbuda petitioned the WTO to examine the matter,
arguing that U.S. laws including the Wire Act, Travel Act and
Illegal Gaming Business Act violate international trade accords in
preventing Americans from gambling on its casino websites. A recent
WTO ruling found that some U.S. laws did in fact violate
international commerce rules, and made recommendations for how the
U.S. could regain compliance. The WTO panel is expected to deliver a
ruling within 90 days on how the U.S. is complying with its
recommendations; both sides then have the option to appeal that
ruling.

o YouTube Sued for
Copyright Infringement of L.A. Riots Beating Video
Los Angeles - An independent reporter has filed a
copyright infringement lawsuit against video-sharing site YouTube,
alleging the site offered unauthorized clips of his video footage of
the 1992 L.A. riots. Robert Tur filed suit in U.S. District Court
against YouTube, claiming that his helicopter video footage of truck
driver Reginald Denny's beating from rioters has been viewed over
1,000 times and hampered his ability to license the footage. San
Mateo, Calif.-based YouTube said the suit was without merit. The
company said it removed Tur's video as soon as it learned of his
complaint, adding that Tur never asked YouTube to take the video
down before filing suit. Tur's lawsuit seeks $150,000 per violation
and an injunction against YouTube's posting any more of his works.

o Shares of
Yahoo Plummet to Two-Year Low
Sunnyvale, Calif. - Shares of Yahoo plunged nearly 22% on
Wednesday, sending company shares to a two-year low. The sell-off
came after Yahoo reported a drop in second-quarter profits, as well
as the delay of an upgrade to its search advertising system. Late
Tuesday, the company reported a 28% increase in net sales to $1.12,
but the figure still fell below consensus analyst estimates of $1.14
billion, according to a survey by Thomson First Call. Yahoo also has
pushed back the release of its new search platform from the third to
the fourth quarter. All told, the company lost nearly $10 billion in
market value on Wednesday. Arch-rival Google is scheduled to release
its earnings on Thursday.

Survey: Majority of Bloggers Writing About Personal Experiences
Washington - The vast majority of bloggers are focused on
describing their personal experiences to a relatively small audience
of readers, with only a small proportion choosing to write about
politics, media, government or technology, according to a new survey
by the DC-based Pew Internet & American Life Project. More than
three-quarters (76%) of those surveyed said that they blog to
document their personal experiences and share them with others, with
nearly 40% writing about "life and experiences." Subjects such as
entertainment, sports, news and current events each accounted for
less than 6% of the content. "Blogs are as individual as the people
who keep them, but this survey shows that most bloggers are
primarily interested in creative, personal expression," said Amanda
Lenhart, a senior research specialist at Pew. The organization said
that the blog population has grown to about 12 million American
adults, or about 8% of adult Internet users.
