o Netflix Shares Fall 20%, Despite 46% Revenue Spike in Second Quarter

Los Gatos, Calif. - Shares of online DVD rental service Netflix fell 20% in Tuesday trading, as the company's third-quarter outlook failed to meet analysts' expectations, despite reporting a 46% revenue increase for the second quarter of 2006. Netflix revenue rose to $239.4 million during the quarter, while subscriptions rose 62% over the same period a year ago, to 5.17 million. The company expects to end the third quarter with between 5.5 and 5.7 million subscribers, and count 6.3 million by the end of the year; Netflix projects it will have 20 million subscribers by 2010-12. However, the company's third quarter revenue forecast of $249-$254 million fell short of analysts' predictions of $258.3 million.

o CEO of U.K. Gambling Site BetOnSports Fired Following U.S. Arrest

London - U.K. gambling website BetOnSports announced on Tuesday that it has terminated CEO David Carruthers and removed him from the company's board, following his arrest on charges of racketeering and fraud while traveling in the U.S. last week. London-based BetOnSports has been ordered by the U.S. government to return all deposits from U.S. customers, who are the main patrons of its service that lets users place bets on football and other sports. "Clearly, while he remains in the custody of the U.S. Government he is unable to perform his duties. Further the company has been unable to speak directly with Mr. Carruthers," BetOnSports said in a statement. Carruthers has been in custody since July 16; 11 others including company founder Gary Kaplan have also been charged as part of a 22-count indictment. Shares of BetOnSports are currently suspended on the U.K. exchange, and the company has also temporarily stopped taking bets online.

Framingham, Mass. - The number of U.S. mobile subscribers paying for mobile TV or video content is expected to grow from 7 million this year to 24 million by 2010, according to a report from market research firm IDC. The firm noted obstacles to adoption of mobile TV and video services including uneven operator broadband network deployments, handset limitations, business model complexities and indirect competition.

The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday featured an interview with News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, part of which focuses on the company's recent $580 million acquisition of social networking site MySpace.com. Not a penny has been spent marketing it before or after the purchase, and it just grows faster and faster every week. Now we're taking it out to other countries," Murdoch told THR. "It will be a little bit different in each country. The English-speaking world will be easy. We will have to think about going with a slightly different model or architecture in Japan or Germany or some other countries. It will be driven by exactly the same principles. Young people are the same everywhere. They are curious. They want to take control of things. They want to live in their own world," added Murdoch.
