o FCC: U.S. Broadband Connections
Up 33% to 50.2 Million
Washington - The number of U.S. broadband subscriptions
rose 33% in 2005, to 50.2 million lines, according to a report
released on Wednesday by the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC). For the first time, new DSL lines outpaced cable modem
accounts, with DSL adding 5.7 million lines in 2005, compared with
cable's 4.2 million. Overall, cable still leads with 57.5% of all
broadband lines, compared with 40.5% for DSL; however, cable's share
of the market fell 3.5% in 2005, while DSL's share increased 3.3%.
The FCC said that DSL is now available to 78% of U.S. households
that receive local telephone service, while cable broadband is
available to 93% of cable TV subscribers.

o Metallica
to Finally Sell Songs on Apple's iTunes Store
New York - Metallica, a band vocal in its opposition to
free file-sharing and late to digital services, finally ended its
boycott of Apple's iTunes Store on Wednesday, agreeing to license
songs from four of its early albums to be sold a la carte on the
service, Billboard reported. Full Metallica albums have previously
been available for purchase on other digital services, but the
band's opposition to selling single tracks put it at odds with
Apple's retail policy. The songs from "Kill 'Em All," "Ride the
Lightning," "Master of Puppets" and "…And Justice for All" are
currently available only from the U.S. and Canadian iTunes Stores,
in light of an ongoing dispute with Mercury, the label that
distributes the band's albums outside of North America.
