o Video Game Industry to Radically
Downsize Annual E3 Expo
Washington - The Entertainment Software Association (ESA),
a video game industry trade group, said on Monday that it plans to
radically reduce the size of its annual Electronic Entertainment
Expo (E3), an event that over the past 12 years has become the
pre-eminent event of the video game industry. The organization said
that it will move the 2007 version of the event to a more intimate
venue in Los Angeles, focused on press events and small meetings
with media, retail, development and other key sectors. Douglas
Lowenstein, the president of the ESA, said on Monday that the goals
of the event have changed since its launch. "At that time we were
focused on establishing the industry and securing orders for the
holiday season," said Lowenstein. "Over the years, it has become
clear that we need a more intimate program." According to a report
by the website Next Generation, "the larger exhibitors have jointly
decided that the costs of the event do not justify the returns,"
instead choosing to focus on "events that bring attention to their
own product lines rather than the industry as a whole." A senior
industry source told GamesIndustry.biz that publisher Electronic
Arts has been meeting with E3 organizers and the ESA in an attempt
to reduce event costs. Senior executives speaking with
GamesIndustry.biz during this year's E3 also suggested they chose
not to show many key products at E3, because "it is no longer the
correct venue for that type of unveiling." The ESA said additional
details on the new E3Expo will be forthcoming in the next few
months.

o AOL to Launch Test
Version of Free Video Portal
Dulles, Va. - Looking to ramp up its free content in an
effort to draw visitors, AOL said on Monday that it will launch a
beta version of its new video portal later this week. The sitewill
allow visitors to find, watch and share videos from across the web.
It will also feature 45 new video-on-demand content channels, free
streaming content and the ability to download full-length content
that can be viewed on multiple devices and PCs. AOL said the portal
will include a video search tool, based on technology from Truveo
and Singingfish, and a video player that can go full screen without
losing picture quality. And, through a partnership with Intel, AOL
said that it plans to release a new tool in the coming weeks that
will allow users of some Intel-based PCs to view its video on large
screen TVs and other devices. Time Warner is expected to unveil its
new strategic direction for AOL during a conference call on
Wednesday.

Germany's Infitec to Develop 3D Digital Cinema System
San Francisco - Dolby Laboratories, the developer of

in automotive design, will be integrated with Dolby's existing Dolby
Digital Cinema system for movie exhibitors. "Recent 3-D digital
movie releases have demonstrated true audience demand," said Tim
Partridge, a senior vice president at Dolby Laboratories. "Per
screen attendances for 3-D digital screens have been more than
double those of traditional showings, which is why we believe that
