o AOL to Offer Free Software, E-mail to Broadband Users

Dulles, Va. - In a major shift in policy designed to lure advertisers, media giant Time Warner said on Wednesday that it will make the software and e-mail of AOL available for free to broadband users. Other tools, such as tools for Internet safety and security, also will be made available for no charge. The move comes after AOL has lost several million of its core dial-up subscribers in recent years either to broadband providers or less expensive dial-up companies. "This is the next logical step for AOL to capitalize further on the explosive rise in broadband usage and online advertising," said Jeff Bewkes, the president and COO of Time Warner. "We expect to put AOL back on a growth path." The strategy is considered risky by some analysts, since 80% of AOL's current revenue is derived from subscriptions, which cost $25.90 a month. Though the company still will offer subscriptions, it is expected to significantly cut back on marketing and customer service, likely eliminating thousands of jobs. AOL currently has 18.5 million subscribers, down from about 26.5 million in 2002. The plan is expected to be fully implemented by early September.

o XM Satellite Radio Signs Advertising Pact with Google

Washington - XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite radio service to more than 7 million subscribers, said on Wednesday that it has struck a deal that will allow advertising clients of Google to place targeted ads on XM's non-music channels. Using Google's dMarc ad technology platform, which the company acquired in January, advertisers will be able to automatically schedule and insert ads across several XM channels, then track their campaigns. Google has been testing the platform over the past several months, and plans to integrate it into its AdWords service during the fourth quarter. Ryan Steelberg, Google's head of radio operations, called the partnership with XM "a powerful marketing and distribution tool for Google advertisers."

o Coke, Apple to Give Away 70 Million iTunes Songs in Europe

London - Coca-Cola announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with Apple on a promotion that will give away more than 70 million iTunes song downloads and hundreds of iPods in Europe. Apple said that its iTunes Stores in Europe have now sold a combined total of 200 million songs, with 150 million sold in just the past year. Coca-Cola recently shuttered MyCokeMusic.com, its branded digital music store available in Europe. The promotion with Apple coincides with the launch of a new Coke-branded music website across Europe. The site features iTunes integration throughout, and the ability for unsigned artists in the U.K., Germany, Austria and Switzerland to upload songs and win the chance to play at Coke-sponsored European festivals. The promotion will give away 70 million iTunes songs in the U.K., launching later this month in promotional packs of Coca-Cola and Diet Coke. The companies will also give away thousands of iTunes songs and hundreds of iPods in Germany, in a promotion launching in September. Coca-Cola said that promotions in additional countries across Europe will roll out in coming months.

o Report: 65% of Adults Who Own Cars, MP3 Players Listen While Driving

Detroit - Nearly two-thirds (65%) of adults who own both cars and MP3 players use an adapter to listen to digital music while driving, according to a report from market research firm Harris Interactive. Overall, about one in 10 adult car owners also owns an MP3 player. The percentage who listen in the car is even higher (72%) among 25 to 44 year-olds. "This means that vehicle manufacturers need to pay specific attention to the types of vehicles these buyers are interested in and equip the audio systems accordingly," said Harris Interactive senior director Bryan Krulikowski. "While new technologies and features typically trickle-down from luxury vehicles to mass-market vehicles, MP3 integration may become a 'trickle-up' feature given its young user base." The survey of nearly 13,000 adults also found that over half (52%) of those who use an MP3 player in the car -- and 14% of all adult car owners -- said they are extremely or very likely to consider purchasing an MP3 audio system interface technology for their next vehicle. Among technologies, an auxiliary jack located on the car stereo itself was most favored (39%), followed by Bluetooth (23%) or Firewire/USB connections (19%); least favored were the FM transmitters and cassette adapters currently widely available.
