o WSJ: Amazon.com to Launch Digital
Music Service This Year
New York -- Online retail giant Amazon.com is planning to launch
a digital music download store and subscription service later this
year, which will compete with Apple's iTunes and others in the
space, The Wall Street Journal reported. The Journal cited people
familiar with licensing discussions held between Amazon executives
and record label executives, and also pointed to a job listing on
the company's website seeking a content acquisition manager, for
"our forthcoming digital music service." Amazon may also seek to
license tracks from MusicNet, the digital music distribution company
set up by several major labels and RealNetworks. "It takes a certain
dedication and focus on that part of the business to make it
profitable, and to make it compelling," GartnerG2 analyst Mike
McGuire told CNET News.com. "We've seen earlier that having a big
brand and being powerful in other media or online businesses doesn't
guarantee online music success."

o Justice Dept.
Makes First Indictment Under Camcorder Piracy Law
San Jose, Calif. -- The U.S. Justice Dept. this week made its
first indictment under a new law that makes it a crime to bring a
camcorder into a movie theater to make a pirate recording.
Nineteen-year-old Curtis Salisbury, of St. Charles, Missouri, faces
up to 17 years in prison for allegedly bringing a camcorder into
screenings of "The Perfect Man" and "Bewitched," later posting
copies of the pirate recordings he made on file-sharing networks. In
addition to the charges under the camcorder law, which took effect
in April, the Justice Dept. has also leveled conspiracy and
copyright infringement charges against Salisbury, who allegedly also
downloaded a number of pirated films and software programs from the
networks. The Justice Dept. said Salisbury's indictment was a result
of Operation Copycat -- a local version of its larger Operation Site
Down online piracy investigations -- that have so far indicted five
individuals and conducted more than 40 searches nationwide.
Salisbury is scheduled to appear in court in federal court San Jose,
Calif. on Aug. 18.

o IRMA: Eight
of 17 Accused Music Uploaders Agree to Settle
Dublin -- The Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) announced
that eight of the 17 people it has accused of being among Ireland's
worst offenders for illegally uploading music have agreed to settle
out of court. The IRMA said the eight people agreed to pay damages
of up between $2,470 and $7,400, and to never again swap music
illegally over the Internet. The IRMA's action against the
file-swappers began in April as part of a global campaign led by the
International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which
filed more than 960 cases against file-sharers in Austria, Denmark,
France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Iceland, Finland, Ireland,
Japan and the U.K. IRMA Director Dick Doyle said that his
organization had additional information on other alleged
file-swappers and that it may target more individuals in the coming
months.

Digital Music Firm Vitaminic to Acquire France-Based Freever
Milan -- Buongiorno Vitaminic Spa (BV), an Italy-based digital
music distributor, announced that it has acquired Freever, a
France-based mobile community developer, for approximately $22.9
million. "Freever is the uncontested leader in the Mobile Community
sector in Europe," said BV CEO Andrea Casalini. "Due to its

concerning privacy and protection of minors and the loyalty gained
from both the end-users as well as the major European telephone
companies, Freever has built a profitable and sustainable business

technology for streaming video over the Internet, has been arrested
in California for stealing about $560,000 that he raised from

o Report: One
in Seven Cell Phones Become Faulty in First Year
London -- About one of every seven mobile phones become faulty
within just one year of purchase, according to a new report by U.K.
consumer watchdog group Which? Of those phones that develop a
problem, about 70% do so within six months, the report said. "A
one-in-seven chance your phone's going to develop a fault is way too
high," said Malcom Coles, the editor of Which? "Not only that, but
retailers who should be bending over backwards to help customers
who've already suffered the inconvenience of a fault aren't giving
people the help they need." The firm said that handsets made by
Motorola and Sony Ericsson were the most likely to malfunction, with
approximately 20% of owners reporting faults, while Nokia and
Samsung were considered the most reliable.

(San Francisco) Wired News reported on Friday on language in a
proposed European Commission directive on piracy that would

software can be held liable for copyright infringement. The
proposal, which will be debated later this year, could go even
further than the U.S. ruling, making "indirect copyright
infringement" a crime. It would also set maximum criminal penalties
for "criminal organizations" engaged in piracy at four years in
prison and a $370,000 fine.
